These people don't represent most African Americans just like the KKK doesn't represent most white Americans, but the reaction of Karmelo's mother was telling... They have about $700K in donations which should keep them in a position to continue living their current lifestyle in their mansion (likely they are renting it for about $9k/month) while they look for an appellate attorney. Karmelo got 35 years for killing Austin Metcalf by plunging a knife in his chest after he was pushed by Austin at a track meet. Karmelo will be eligible for parole in 17.5 years. I have done a lot of research on Karmelo and combined with my familiarity with the Texas prison system, this will be Shawshank moment for Karmelo when those doors slam. Not in terms of abuse from guards, but in terms of going from a cushy suburban life to a prison where there are gangs and where there is very little freedom. He may be considered a hero among the black inmates though. He will have to join a black prison gang to survive and that will come at a cost...Yes, you know what I mean. If he gets the Tolford or the Coffield units, it will really be tough, but he will be alive and if he behaves will be out before he is 37 and have a life ahead of him to live, unlike his murder victim. His mom should be more concerned about pleading to the judge and officials for Karmelo to get a unit like Huntsville.
