About 41,000 years ago, during the Laschamp Geomagnetic Excursion, Earth's magnetic field weakened drastically, dropping to just 5% of its current strength. This means that Earth’s natural magnetic shield, which normally protects us from harmful space radiation, was almost entirely gone. The magnetic field lines (seen as white or blue strands) became twisted and chaotic, showing how disordered the field became during the excursion. Normally, these lines flow smoothly from pole to pole, but during this event, they bent, broke, and tangled. The Earth turns red in the visualization, indicating an extremely weak magnetic field. The red color means the planet was barely protected from solar and cosmic radiation. This visualization was created by scientists from DTU and GFZ using data from ESA’s Swarm mission. It includes a stereo soundscape and a visual tracing of the magnetic field lines. This event caused abrupt climate change and mass extinction, and the same thing is happening today!

NASA’s ESCAPADE mission successfully launched yesterday, Nov. 13, 2025! But it wasn’t without any hiccups — or maybe violent burps? — from the Sun! ☀️🌬️ The launch of ESCAPADE, our next mission to Mars, was delayed by a day due to the most powerful geomagnetic storm of 2025. The storm was caused by multiple flares and eruptions known as coronal mass ejections heading toward Earth. With the help of NASA satellites and models, the team could monitor when the storm subsided and by the following day, it was safe to launch.

There was also a total solar eclipse on Aug. 12. How come SDO didn't see it? SDO follows a “geosynchronous” orbit, orbiting Earth at the same rate as Earth spins. The spacecraft effectively “hovers” over its ground station in White Sands, New Mexico. White Sands was outside of the eclipse’s path, so SDO didn’t see it. Visualize SDO’s orbit:

While this week’s flare count was fairly low, there was a surplus of coronal mass ejections. The week’s strongest flare was an M3-class, which can be seen erupting from an active region on the eastern limb (left side of Sun) at about 3:02. Here was the last planetary alignment shown in the coronagraph similar to the upcoming sequence early Jan 2026. Four planetary conjunctions in quick success with a comet impact as well and just afterwards a G4 geomagnetic storm hits Earth from some BIG CMEs. Notice the sunspot number increase from Oct to December 2006, a 4x increase!! Venus and Mars perform a double Cazimi and get some initial activity going as seen by the faint full halo CMEs (oct. 22-23, 31st). Then the comet impact (11/3-11/4 being another great example of a CME directly following a comet impact to the Sun) and Mercury's inferior conjunction further spice things up. Just as Jupiter goes Cazimi CME start blasting off like crazy from the western limb (left side) and then when they rotate Earth-direct BOOMSHAKALAKA. Solar Storm impacts at 900 km/s immediately sending Earth into G4 conditions for 6 hours. When you have the space weather, planetary geometry, and geophysics skillsets, the connections are clear as day to see.

A massive magnetic pulse was observed at the exact 30:37 UTC moment of the M7.3 earthquake in Japan, with solar wind at 8 nT Bt and -7 nT Bz (strong connection to Earth), and in the immediate three hours that followed there was a G1 geomagnetic storm though solar wind conditions overall were nominal. The seismic waves rippled across the entire globe as we can see here with our GMV visualization.

Last week, we were treated to the most incredible aurora borealis I have ever seen. There was a major coronal mass ejection from the Sun, and as those particles reach Earth, they interact with our magnetic field and our upper atmosphere to create the green, red, and blue/purple hues that we see. I spent most of the evening just staring out of the Cupola windows – it was as if we were surrounded by a glowing fog of red. I tried to capture it in a timelapse video. Sergey Kud-Sverchkov also got a great picture of me as we were all enjoying the light show!

Using Grok build, now we were able to cross the magnetosphere data (from ACE and Solar-1 satellites) which shown the magnetic field lines of the Earth .... with the BOM (bureau of meteorology Australia) magnetopause feed ------ the BOM shows the standoff distance of the edge of the magnetosphere ----- the area called the "magnetopause". Now we get to see the buffeting blasts of solar wind and charged particles when they hit Earth (coming from the sun). This then perturbs the electromagnetic field lines of Earth shown by ACE and Solar-1 -- and that vibration is carried on down to the CORE OF THE EARTH! Also added in the ability to turn off Earth (transparent) so we can see inside Earth down to the calculations most people never even get to see -- and see it get vibrated , plucked like strings on a guitar! The BOM data, as well as the ACE, and Solar-1 data are all real time, and can be set to update every 1minute to every hour! The projected trail of the magnetic field around Earth is just an approximation, but it set to also vibrate along with the BOM data showing the magnetopause compression / expansion when strong solar winds, or large particle storms hit. Simply put, summed up, using Grok we were able to rebuild the old school Japanese NICT site, make it fully 3D interactive, and add in the BOM to make a new form of data observation where both the magnetopause, and magnetosphere data are combined into one, displayed on the same screen at the same time!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Both feeds can be toggled on / off so as to view one or the other as well if the user wishes! I will release this to the public for free along with the Solar and Earthquake programs very soon!
