A police vehicle stationed outside to block the entrance and verbally informed by authorities that will not be allowed to go to Jama Masjid today for Friday sermon and prayers. This is the #4thConsecutiveFriday when I am being stopped from going to Jama Masjid,where people in large numbers eagerly await to participate in majlis e waz. After Shab-e-Qadr, Jama Masjid Srinagar continues to remain closed to people and I under house detention, even today on Juma-Tul-Vida, when lakhs of people eagerly await the whole year to offer congregational prayers on this blessed Friday for great reward and blessing from Allah. Want to ask the authorities why is this most important centre of Kashmir’s religious identity and affinity repeatedly targeted and peoples fundamental right to religious practice curbed, when tall claims of normalcy are trumpeted every day? Those ruling in peoples name cannot absolve themselves from standing up to address this gross injustice towards Muslims of the valley and the repeated closure of #JamaMasjid.

Yesterday, around 2:40 PM, in broad daylight, robbers broke into a part of my house while I was away. My parents were at home, yet they managed to cross the huge boundary wall, ransack every corner, and steal some belongings. I got to know from a source that they were heavily under the influence of drugs, committing this act to feed their addiction. It’s heartbreaking and deeply disturbing. I sincerely hope Punjab Police catches them soon and ensures strict punishment, setting an example that such crimes in broad daylight will not be tolerated! This ruthless assault, which included the arrest of Mahrang Baloch and several others, represents yet another act of state repression against the Baloch people. Today a group of Muslims prayed next to the Ministry of Defence, facing the Iraq and Afghanistan memorial. As I have said before, choosing to pray in this way in public is a political act. It is a social statement and, yes, it is an act of domination. Anybody who understands Islamism understands that the domination of public spaces is part of the modus operandi. It is done so Islamists can show who is in charge - and to show other Muslims and the wider public that the authorities will bend to their will. There is quite obviously no need to pray here. The decision to do so is symbolic and pointed. It is not welcome. We have freedom of religion in this country, which is why there are mosques. But we are not a Muslim country and this is not welcome. It should be stopped.

Today, protestors arrived at one of my events to hurl the moniker ‘Nazi Nancy.’ One must marvel at how their grasp of history leaves much to be desired. The precise intimidation and indoctrination they claim never occurs is unfolding once more. Make no mistake: this is the unhinged vitriol which puts conservatives in mortal danger. We will not be cowed by the mob. We will hold the line.
