Found something interesting in Sonic 4. From how it we see Metal Sonic drop down to the floor and the fact it's called Zone 3, we can tell it's meant to take place right after Metal Sonic got beaten in Sonic CD. But more importantly, Metal Sonic has his modern design.

Getting hit in Sonic Racing CrossWorlds looks so less frustrating then what it was in Team Sonic Racing. No matter what hits you in TSR, you would always come to a complete stop. I know it was to push the team mechanics, but they didn't adjust it at all for solo races.
