For those Confused Is this really done by barcodes? I would say yes and no. I have no direct knowledge, but the sound output exceeds that of any handheld barcode reader that I do have experience with. I assume that these readers are connected to a computer that is programmed to play certain synthesized tones or samples based on the bar pattern being read by the hand held unit. One could theoretically do the same with a colorimeter or other types of optical sensors with different types of samples such as color swatches or panels with different luminance levels. The key would be to associate each visual sample with a different tone/ audio sample and also be able to detect things like distance and movement to allow the musician to alter the output by moving the sensor around the visual sample like you see in the video. So, yes, the barcodes are integral to the experience. But no, the barcodes themselves do not have audio information encoded in them that is being read by the readers. The patterns on display in this video are far too simplistic to contain such variety of sound. But they are enough to map them uniquely to different tones or audio samples that a computer can interpret and process into what you're hearing. Think of this as an alternative input to a music keyboard where each key is mapped to a different sample.
