The Kariye Mosque that Prime Minister Mark Carney visited in Istanbul (historically known as Constantinople) was originally the Byzantine Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Saviour in Chora — «Εκκλησία του Αγίου Σωτήρος εν τη Χώρα», commonly known as «Μονή της Χώρας». For centuries, Christians worshipped there. Its extraordinary 14th-century mosaics and frescoes depict Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, saints and biblical scenes. Following the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453, the church was converted into a mosque in the early 1500s. During its subsequent use, many Christian images were gradually concealed beneath plaster, paint or whitewash. Some decoration was removed, while other mosaics remained visible. Designated a museum in 1945, the building underwent extensive restoration beginning in the late 1940s. Conservators uncovered and preserved surviving Christian artworks. President Erdoğan ordered its reconversion into a mosque in 2020. It reopened for Muslim worship on May 6, 2024. Much of its Christian artwork remains preserved and visible today, particularly in the entrance halls and adjoining chapel. Three surviving mosaics in the main prayer hall have curtain coverings. It would be inaccurate to claim that all its Christian imagery has been erased or concealed. Christians are allowed to worship in Turkey, and active churches hold regular services. But Christian communities also face significant restrictions. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom’s August 2026 country brief documents: • Legal recognition: Religious communities cannot acquire legal personality as religious bodies. • Church property: Restrictions complicate property ownership and management, and some claims concerning confiscated properties remain unresolved. • Places of worship: Bureaucratic barriers obstruct the registration, opening, construction or restoration of worship spaces. • Training clergy: Restrictions prevent Christian communities from freely training their clergy within Turkey. • Residency: Foreign Christian clergy, religious workers and their families have faced residency and re-entry restrictions. Prime Minister, this monument’s full history deserves recognition. So do the rights of the Christian communities who continue to live and worship in Turkey. Diplomacy should never require historical amnesia. Preserving Christian heritage and defending religious freedom both matter.
