For mechanical type assembly things constraint and driver based animations comes to me more logical.. Armature rigging is more like for character rigging process in my opinion. Sure all comes to same result.

I can see that. In the end it's whatever works best for you. But object constraints are missing the IK system which is one of the most powerful and for me the most used. So I couldn't replicate many systems with just boneless constraints.

Could you rig it so the screw rotation actually drives the jack? That would be fun.

That should be fairly easy. Just switch the transform constraint to the current ik controller and make him move when rotation is applied. I could try that
