You can support consumer data access AND still think Chase has a point. In a recent Fintech Recap, Jason Mikula and I unpack JPMorgan Chase’s move to charge for API access and the the battle lines being drawn around open banking. On one side, fintechs and data aggregators argue... that data access is a consumer right — and that Chase’s pricing is a power move to limit competition. On the other: banks counter that they've been on the hook for fraud, compliance, and misuse for years (and are footing the bill). They want liability protections and cost-sharing before continuing to subsidize fintechs' business model. Both sides have a point. What's happening right now is what you'd expect any dominant incumbent to do in the absence of rules that constrain them. Clearly this level of bare-knuckled capitalism was too much even for the Trump CFPB, which is why the Bureau is working to revamp rather than get rid of the rule. We'll see if the CFPB is able to strike the right balance between fintechs' interest and banks' interest on this question. 🎥 Clip below from the pod. Here is the play in question by Ryan, and as much as this is obvious that the catcher didn't secure this ... the rule in place for scorers is if a thorw BOUNCES, it is a throwing error. I do not like applying this in this type of instance on a throw from the outfield, but right now that's how the rule reads. Only the committee can change it on appeal, and they would have to do that against the writter rule (to the consternation of those in charge I'm certain). But letter of the law ... the throwing error is correct.

So here’s the deal, THE TREASURY DEPARTMENT DATA IS COMPROMISED. Actors without security clearance have been given access to scrape your data. Elon Musk now controls your data and it represents the same level of control exerted by the Chinese government’s social credit system. Musk is now able to profile every name on the treasury data systems. There is no way to sugar coat the fact that your data is no longer secure. It can now be used to target you and not for your benefit, be sure of that. Democrats and advocacy groups can take all the legal action they like, THE DATA IS COMPROMISED and you can’t put the genie back in the bottle. This data can now be used to literally social engineer services to target any perceived enemy of ‘the state’. Call me a conspiracy theorist if you like, but then sit back have a think if any of what I am suggesting is not possible. I analyse big data for a living and I have no solution to this problem and neither does any Democrat telling you it can be fixed.

What is happening in crypto right now is a resolution of the dislocation between expectations and fair value since the election in November. This is something we discussed and warned on the roundup on November 16th and ever since price has been flat/down and there's no signs of an SBR which is very different vs the expectations that were baked in. It is because of this concern for a potential dislocation that I/we have been on defence ever since the election after being disgustingly bullish in the lead up to it. The good news is this post-election premium is now being unwound, especially in alts. The bad news is this is happening during a time of relative equity strength. As traders, it is crucial to understand that markets are forward looking and you always need to be comparing expectations baked in vs reality, and not headlines on a standalone basis. Anyway. I'm sad to see the state of things right now and hopefully not too many people were carried out here. I do think that now that a lot of this dislocation has been resolved that the worst is over, but that is dependent on a positive macro environment which I'm not sure of. Godspeed. In the states that shared their data, there were well over half a million cases of fraud — and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Why are other states suing us for asking for the data? What are they hiding? Taxpayers deserve honesty. They deserve accountability. And it’s time for a historic crackdown to finally protect your money and not reward fraud!

This is a standard practice for almost all Tier-1 banking applications in Nigeria, and for some fintech applications I’ve previously performed pentests on. Client-side encryption isn’t a total waste, or a waste of compute, as some people have claimed, but rather a measure to protect against API tampering or API request/response manipulation between the client and the server when implemented properly. Even with HTTPS, attackers can capture a decrypted version of web or mobile API data in transit because the browser and the server establish a level of trust during the TLS handshake. Attackers can leverage this trust to capture & proxy already-decrypted traffic, tamper with it, and then forward it to the server. This allows them to override what the user interface or client is originally supposed to send and replace it with data of their choosing. That is why validation needs to be performed on both the client and the server side. To wrap up, encrypting API requests and responses makes it significantly harder for attackers to tamper with data, even if they capture the traffic, unless they have access to the encryption details (algorithm, encryption mode, key size, secret key, and initialization vector), assuming asymmetric encryption is used. In the demo below, you can see how I discovered additional parameters (balance, is_admin) in the API response, captured the registration API request, despite it being sent over HTTPS from the interface, added the discovered parameters, and successfully inflated my balance to 50 billion and also escalated my privileges to admin, and ultimately deleted the accounts of two live users/customers. In the second slide, I captured an API traffic of a bank app, and you can see how difficult the payloads are to read.
