Every time you give into desire, and indulge in whatever sensual pleasure you may indulge in, it creates what is called a samskara in the mind. Samkaras are impressions that are left in the mind whenever the senses contact the sense objects. It is from these samskaras that we get memories of our previous pleasurable sensual indulgences, and it is from these memories that further desires arise. This is why you can never actually satisfy desire, because the very act of indulgence itself only results in perpetuating the cycle of indulgence → samskara → memory → desire → indulgence, etc, etc. This is why desire is insatiable, and trying to satisfy it by indulgence is compared to trying to put out a fire by pouring fuel on it—all that happens is the fire only burns stronger. So what you have to do, is act in such a way that creates new samskaras in the mind that will result in desires that will lead to uplifting behaviours and habits. For example, the next time you're faced with the temptation of either indulging or resisting, if you choose to resist, and instead you pray, study scripture, etc, this will create a positive samskara in your mind. And the more you do this, the more those positive samskaras will be left in your mind, and as a result, the stronger you will become at resisting temptation and doing the right thing, and the better your behaviours and habits will be.

That’s the difference between Catholics and Protestants. Catholics hold themselves to account Protestants think they are saved no matter how they act.
