Tielemans would have suited Arsenal’s football more. He is technically gifted, composed under pressure, excellent at progressing the ball, can dictate the tempo, arrive in the box and, most importantly, he understands how to operate in a possession-based system. And then you look at the other factors. He is cheaper, younger, and already has a serious trophy-winning résumé. Arsenal didn’t necessarily need another midfielder who would dominate the headlines, they needed someone who could complement what they already had and make the team more balanced. That’s where I think Arsenal got it wrong. Because if you spend huge money on Bruno Guimarães, you are expecting him to completely transform your midfield. But if Tielemans was available for significantly less, why spend more just because his name carries more weight? Sometimes Arsenal make football unnecessarily complicated.
