You either love Bill Withers or you’re wrong

Bill Withers is the architect of the most human soul in existence. 🤔 Fun fact: When he recorded "Ain't No Sunshine", the "I know" phrase repeated 26 times was just a temporary filler because he couldn't think of more lyrics. His musicians talked him into keeping it, creating one of the most iconic and visceral moments in pop history. Did you know? 🤯

My 9yo daughter loves him. There is hope.

Led me down a Withers rabbit hole. This one can't but make you smile.

Have always loved Bill. From Grok regarding Ain't No Sunshine. : Bill was already 32 or 33 (he was born in '38), a regular guy from West Virginia coal country roots, who’d served nine years in the Navy, then moved to LA. He was working a factory job—assembling toilet seats for Boeing 747 airplanes, of all things—when he wrote it. Practical man that he was, he even kept the day job for a while after the song blew up because he figured the music business was too fickle to trust fully. (When it went gold, the label cheekily gifted him a golden toilet seat as a trophy—classic!) The spark came from watching the 1962 film Days of Wine and Roses (with Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick), about a couple spiraling into alcoholism. Bill saw the toxic, addictive pull in their relationship—the way they kept coming back to something destructive—and connected it to missing someone who’s bad for you, yet the absence still hurts like hell. He turned that into this raw, aching ballad about a man left in darkness when his woman leaves: "Ain't no sunshine when she's gone... It's not warm when she's away..."

How do you turn a duck into a soul singer? Put it in the microwave until it's bill withers. I'll get my coat...

@alexandernev There is nothing to dislike about Brotha Bill. One of the great song writers of the 1970s, along with Joni Mitchell, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Roberta Flack, Paul Simon.

That whole BBC concert is one of my favourite live performances of all time, by anyone. A fucking masterclass

They keep trying to tell me all you want to do is use me.

Call me if anyone disagrees with you and wants to start something.

I don't think I've ever known of anyone who didn't love Bill Withers. His golden voice was unmistakable & so full of emotion.

… And I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know … #Iknow ⬇️⬇️

Played this at my grandma's funeral when we spread her ashes in San Francisco bay

Bill Withers gave an intro to Grandma's Hands at Carnegie Hall in 1972 that was as good as any professional comedian's monologue. All comedy comes from a place of truth. And requires good timing too. Bill Withers had it. I love this version:

Q: how do you turn a duck into a soul singer? A: put it in the microwave until its Bill Withers

If loving Bill Withers is wrong, I don’t wanna be right

When somebody who can really sing like him that guitar is really nothing but a prop. He wasn't there to play guitar.

Is that the same rift/pattern sampled on ‘No Diggity’ by Blackstreet he’s playing in the beginning?

The first singer my daughter could recognize on the speaker at a restaurant; she was 4 years old. I was so proud!
