40 years on, milu deer thrives in China's 'Oriental Kenya' This year marks the 40th anniversary of the milu deer's return to Yancheng, east China's Jiangsu Province. In 1986, 39 milu deer, also known as Père David's deer, traveled from the United Kingdom to Dafeng Milu National Nature Reserve in Yancheng, marking the culmination of a nearly century-long journey home. Forty years on, this wetland is now home to more than 8,800 milu deer, accounting for nearly 70 percent of the global total. The area has not only become the world's largest milu deer nature reserve, but also boasts the world's largest wild milu deer population and gene bank for the species. From 39 to over 8,800 deer, this growth represents not only an achievement in China's ecological conservation efforts, but also a vivid example of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. In Yancheng, 40 years of dedicated protection have allowed the once-endangered milu deer to once again roam freely across their native land.

Each performance was judged by a professional panel, awarding up to 100 points: 75 for the quality of the seagull scream imitation and 25 for behavior. 🐦By the way, this is already the fifth European Championship for seagull screaming.

We set this camera in a new spot last fall where a deer trail crossed a remote hiking trail. This video is a distillation of 7 months of footage totaling >2 hours. Suffice it to say, we were pleased with this spot and we hope you enjoy the footage! The camera was put up in late October. Most of the first videos captured were during the rut when several bucks were traveling on the deer trail. One buck, in particular, was a bruiser in terms of body size. And then as the rut winded down, the number of bucks on camera dwindled and does started using the trail more frequently for the rest of the fall and winter. Of course, wolves traveled on both the hiking and deer trail throughout the fall and winter. In some instances, wolves traveled down the hiking trail and then stopped to smell deer tracks on the deer trail. We suspect they were assessing how fresh the tracks were and therefore how close a deer might be. In some instances, wolves veered off the hiking trail and ventured down the deer trail, and in others, they continued down the hiking trail. Notably, we put this camera here because this is where the Cranberry Bay and Nashata Packs overlap. You can see both packs on cameras. Cranberry is the larger pack and Nashata is the smaller pack with a whitish wolf with green-ear tags. As mentioned above, we distilled >2 hr of footage into a 6 minute video. We did not include much of the nighttime footage, which was mainly of a snowshoe hare that spent a ton of time in front of the camera and deer traveling at night down the deer trail. We included most wolf footage in the video but there were a few nighttime sequences we excluded because they weren’t great quality. Interestingly, though, we did not get a ton of other wildlife on this camera other than wolves and deer.

When a Deer asked Imam al-Reza (as) for Help… Once Imam (AS) was passing by through wilderness when a deer, which was being followed by a hunter came running to Imam (AS) and said something to him. Indeed a divine Imam (AS) understands and speaks all the languages including that of the birds and animals. Imam Baqir (AS) has said, “We have been taught the language of the birds and we have been given of everything”. As soon as the deer spoke to Imam (AS), Imam (AS) interrupted the hunter and said, “The deer has requested that it be spared for the time being as it had to go and feed her two kids. She has promised to return to the same spot and then you can kill her and sell her flesh”. The hunter was puzzled and asked, “How can you understand its language and what’s the guarantee that the deer will return?” Imam (AS) said, “I will give the guarantee and I will stand at the spot until it returns”. The hunter let the deer go and meanwhile, many people gathered around to see the spectacle. After feeding its two kids, the deer returned and stood at the same spot. It also asked the Imam (AS) to take care of her two kids and that she was ready to be killed. People were amazed by this miracle. Even the hunter gave up the idea of killing that deer and this started off the tradition of Imam-e-Zamin, which means ‘the Imam who guards’.

An interesting snippet of a wolf chasing a deer earlier this winter—the wolf was 6.5 seconds behind the deer. In particular, we found the bounding/leaping of the wolf as it ran intriguing. We have captured many hunting sequences like this on camera but have not observed one where the wolf was leaping like this. And that one leap was a pretty big one. We don’t know how the hunt played out after this brief observation.
