The boundary of membership - Who belongs? Membership is the nation's own call, run through its law. And in the founders' corpus that call runs in two layers: a broad gate of descent first, and then a civil-political act on top of it, consent, allegiance, citizenship, for the ones who get through the gate. Publius states the parameters of the people flat out, and common blood leads the list: "With equal pleasure I have as often taken notice, that Providence has been pleased to give this one connected country to one united people—a people descended from the same ancestors, speaking the same language, professing the same religion, attached to the same principles of government, very similar in their manners and customs, and who, by their joint counsels, arms, and efforts, fighting side by side throughout a long and bloody war, have nobly established general liberty and independence." (The Federalist, No. 2) Descent first. Then language, religion, principles, manners. The people is defined by what it inherits before what it does. The civil tie is real, and it comes second. Locke has a man become one of "the people" by consenting; he "joins himself to, and incorporates with" the body politic (§89). Vattel: "The citizens are the members of the civil society: bound to this society by certain duties, and subject to its authority, they equally participate in its advantages. The natives, or natural-born citizens, are those born in the country, of parents who are citizens." (Law of Nations, bk. I, ch. XIX, §212) Blackstone sorts "the People, whether Aliens, Denizens, or Natives" (bk. I, ch. 10) by allegiance, and the power to set the rule is a civil one. The Constitution gives Congress the power "To establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization." That the nation sets its own membership is, on this reading, the doctrine itself. Vattel treats it as the nation's determination, and the founders exercised it. The first exercise of that power was the Naturalization Act of 1790 (1 Stat. 103), which admitted "any alien, being a free white person," of good character, resident two years, on an oath to support the Constitution. So the original statutory qualification combined a descent criterion ("free white person") with civil conditions (character, residence, oath). And the descent piece is not only in the statute. It is written into the charter's own statement of purpose: "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America." (Preamble) The people it constitutes is a line, the founders together with their descendants, not a one-generation compact of consenting adults. Membership was conceived from the start as something inherited as much as joined. It is the same descent thread that runs through citizenship by birth and through the statute's "free white person." Burke, describing the British constitution the founders inherited, states the principle in its purest form. The nation is an entailed estate, passed down by descent and guarded against the alien graft: "We wished at the period of the Revolution, and do now wish, to derive all we possess as an inheritance from our forefathers. Upon that body and stock of inheritance we have taken care not to inoculate any scion alien to the nature of the original plant." (Burke, Reflections on the Revolution in France) "it has been the uniform policy of our Constitution to claim and assert our liberties as an entailed inheritance derived to us from our forefathers, and to be transmitted to our posterity,—as an estate specially belonging to the people of this kingdom, without any reference whatever to any other more general or prior right." (Burke, Reflections on the Revolution in France) The liberties are held by descent, "without any reference whatever to any other more general or prior right." The inherited estate set against the universal claim. And admission asked more than residence and an oath of support. The naturalization oath required the new citizen to renounce his allegiance to his old sovereign. He was trading one membership for another, not just adding a residence. Jefferson gives the reason. A people, he held, must "harmonize as much as possible in matters which they must of necessity transact together," and emigrants who keep the principles of the country they left cannot do that: "They will bring with them the principles of the governments they leave, imbibed in their early youth; or, if able to throw them off, it will be in exchange for an unbounded licentiousness, passing, as is usual, from one extreme to another. It would be a miracle were they to stop precisely at the point of temperate liberty. These principles, with their language, they will transmit to their children. In proportion to their numbers, they will share with us the legislation. They will infuse into it their spirit, warp and bias its directions, and render it a heterogeneous, incoherent, distracted mass." (Jefferson, Notes on the State of Virginia, Query VIII) So membership was conceived as adoption into one people, shedding the old country and taking on the new one. Not a permit to reside.

the role of the dodge v ford motor co. lawsuit in american economic policy should be discussed more often. That lawsuit determined that maximizing shareholder value was the moral imperative of every american company, created some very perverse incentives.

Charlie Kirk was against immigration but he was against racism too. Backlash from Bo French's post was not because of anti immigration, all were US citizens, it was because of racism. Charlie like any Christian was against racism.

I don't think we can or SHOULD try to retain the entirety of the continental United States. This is not defeatist. This is realistic and pragmatic and that is the ONLY criteria that matters. WE. MUST. WIN. Where ever we are most able first, Build, Harden, Expand. PNW first.
