I played as well. I'm 54 years old, and mind you, I was a mediocre Division 1 football player. The medical ailments from football are nothing to laugh at. I've had both my hips and my knee replaced. I have daily neck pain. Would I have traded it? Absolutely not. Football gave me the opportunity to go to college, which financially would not have been achievable otherwise.
