Their self-determination is now set to be further restricted: In March, the National People’s Congress passed a “Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity.” Mandarin is to be prioritized in all schools, government offices, and public life. There are approximately 300 languages and dialects in China, which now face the threat of being forcibly silenced. The resulting erosion of the cultural and religious identity of millions of people is deliberate and constitutes yet another unacceptable attack on universal human rights. Especially in light of our historical responsibility, we Europeans must clearly address this forced assimilation and oppose it with confidence.

China has passed a new ‘ethnic unity’ law which critics warn could in fact worsen the rights of ethnic minorities. Children must now be taught in Mandarin rather than their native language. There are 55 ethnic minority groups in China which represent less than 10 per cent of the population. On paper, the new legislation aims to promote integration between minority groups and China says it’ll help people get jobs in the future. But critics argue that this will cut people off from their culture and language and is an attempt to assimilate them further into the Han ethnic majority.
