Their self-determination is now set to be further restricted: In March, the National People’s Congress passed a “Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity.” Mandarin is to be prioritized in all schools, government offices, and public life. There are approximately 300 languages and dialects in China, which now face the threat of being forcibly silenced. The resulting erosion of the cultural and religious identity of millions of people is deliberate and constitutes yet another unacceptable attack on universal human rights. Especially in light of our historical responsibility, we Europeans must clearly address this forced assimilation and oppose it with confidence.

There are 55 ethnic minority groups in China which represent less than 10 per cent of the population.
