on top of the moral considerations, designing and operating a system to means-test benefits like these based on household income is almost always more expensive than just offering the benefit to everyone. just give the kids free lunch and breakfast dammit.

As someone from a lower middle income family going to a Catholic school due to horrific public schools I understand the ethos behind this. I lived it. I went to school with kids who were crazy wealthy and, especially when I had a dress code vs a uniform, it’s a struggle mentally. Basically a free lunch is the OBVIOUS indicator of family financial status ( as my clothing was) to everyone. But assuming (and the inevitable judging) that people don’t already know economic status is ridiculous. 3 year old backpack, shoes with holes, reused notebooks…there are lots of indicators. So the end result of everyone gets free lunch is a high cost for pretending we don’t know what we know. Not to mention the students who don’t need the lunches taking them for the purpose of mocking them (and of course the inevitable waste). I applaud his dad’s involvement. But in today’s world the logic is misguided.

We don't even think about it in Sweden. Every school has free lunches for kids. We may pay higher taxes, which we all appreciate, but it is worth it. Free medical and university too.
