Biologist Gary Brecka proposes a provocative theory: the genesis of autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and Crohn’s disease may lie in hidden environmental and biological culprits—mold mycotoxins, heavy metals, viruses, and parasites. Rather than the immune system inexplicably turning on the body, Brecka suggests it’s often chasing intruders that have infiltrated cells and tissues, disrupting the body’s balance. Consider multiple sclerosis. Brecka cites autopsy studies where helminth larvae—parasitic worms—were found in the myelin sheaths of MS patients. Intriguingly, not all parasites are harmful. In some underdeveloped regions with low MS rates, “healthy” helminths coexist in the gut, potentially regulating immunity. Brecka theorizes that modern sanitation, while beneficial, may disrupt this balance, allowing pathogenic parasites to proliferate and contribute to diseases like MS. The same principle applies to toxins. Heavy metals like mercury and lead, mycotoxins from mold, and viruses don’t just linger outside cells—they invade them. In Hashimoto’s, Brecka notes the thyroid’s affinity for heavy metals, which can accumulate and draw immune attention, leading to antibody production against the gland. Similarly, Crohn’s disease often stems from a compromised gut barrier, where bacteria and pathogens leak into areas they don’t belong, triggering inflammation. Brecka challenges the narrative that autoimmune diseases are purely genetic or idiopathic. While family history is often cited, he points out there’s no direct gene for conditions like Hashimoto’s. Instead, he urges looking at what draws the immune system to attack: toxins and pathogens hiding inside cells. For example, when a virus injects its DNA into a host cell, the immune system must breach the cell to neutralize it, sometimes producing antibodies against the cell itself. His advice? Don’t accept an autoimmune diagnosis without rigorous testing for mold, mycotoxins, heavy metals, viruses, and parasites. “The immune system isn’t the villain—it’s responding to threats we often overlook,” Brecka says. By addressing these root causes, individuals might better understand their conditions and explore targeted interventions.
