Yes, parents teach your kids not to bring weapons to school, and if confronted by a non-leathal threat teach them to respond with non-lethal action, that is EXACTLY what you SHOULD teach your children.

To use Deadly force, in this case stabbing, the "Deadly Force Triangle" must be met. Capability, Opportunity & Intent. ALL 3 must be present to use deadly force. 1. Capability (Ability): The suspect possesses the physical means, weapons, or skills necessary to cause death or serious bodily harm. Metcalf was much larger so one could argue he had the ability to do bodily harm? However, he was unarmed. 2. Opportunity: The suspect is in a position or within effective range to deploy their capability against an intended victim (e.g., proximity or lack of physical barriers). Metcalf and Anthony were obvious in close proximity. 3. Intent (Jeopardy): The suspect’s words, actions, or aggressive posturing clearly indicate a deliberate willingness or imminent threat to cause serious harm. Did Metcalf intend on causing serious bodily harm? From all accounts, Metcalf just wanted him to leave and ask him many times. At any time, Anthony could have ended it by walking away. If Anthony were backed in a corner and a altercation ensued, maybe the trial would have been less cut & dry. 1. Capability is "iffy" at best and 3. Intent was not met. Deadly force should not have been used. That’s why the verdict was so quick and Anthony is in jail.

He could have defended himself. Just don't stab somebody and kill them. Teenagers get into fights all the time it's expected to a certain degree but what he did was extreme.

I’m from a town and generation where I don’t even care if he had a knife, all the kids I went to school with had pocket knives. After hunting in the morning, we had our shotguns in a gun rack in our trucks. And we even got in fights. Nobody ever grabbed a weapon to escalate.
