This is crazy. It reminds me of 2011. Friday, 26 August 2011. Last day of Census training at IUM in town. Gazza's wife, pregnant at that time, was our Supervisor. Everybody left except me and 3/4 ladies. She asked that I help her carry boxes to a car outside. I carry 3 heavy boxes, one on top of the other. I get to the street and there's only a white KIA sedan in parallel parking with Gazza inside. I walked to the car, standing outside the front passenger side with boxes, talking to him. He looks at me and continues operating on his phone. I leave him alone. He doesn't know me, so I get it. I kept standing and waiting for the wife who was carrying her bag and 2 more lighter boxes. The wife comes. The guy opens the boot and remains seated. The wife puts down her boxes, opens the boot and one by one takes off 2 of the 3 boxes I was carrying , loading them into the boot. We loaded hers, she thanked me, got in the car, and they drove off. Maybe that's just how Gazza acts/acted back then - unresponsive.

Do you remember this young girl? Some time back, while I was carrying out environmental supervision in Nairobi CBD, this young girl approached me and asked for help even if it meant getting a cleaning job. She shared how life on the streets had been tough and how she feared she might never break free from the challenges she was facing as a young girl living there. She later visited me in the office, and through my network, we managed to secure her a fully paid scholarship at ICS College, including hostel accommodation and everything else she needed. I also support her with pocket money to help her stay on track. She often comes by my office to give me updates on how she’s doing, and I am truly happy to see the positive progress in her life.

Watching my mom go from social butterfly to battling Alzheimer’s has been heartbreaking these last few years. Not just for me, but for my wife and my entire family. Having a caretaker in the house seven days a week, for 10 hours a day, is a lot. Your house isn't really your house. And don't get me started on the financial burden. So much credit goes to Jade for being the rock she is, to Huey and Veda being the grandkids my mom was hellbent on being present for, and my mom — for battling depression, grief, and this new reality she never asked for. But now and then, a moment happens that shows the true good in people, and this crazy ass world we live in. This is Abigail. She was my grandma and mom’s caretaker in Virginia. She sat front row at my grandma’s funeral consoling my mom and dealing with her own grief. Abigail is family. We still keep in contact. I hope we always will. Last week, she surprised my mom by coming to visit. Abigail did this because she loves my mom, and one of the last things my grandma ever said to her was, “Please take care of my little girl when I'm gone.” Abigail did that and so much more. To all the great caretakers out there, thank you. Meeting angels on Earth is a blessing. To the healthcare industry, I wish I could say the same.
