@IBCShow Hardware decoding always matters. I played a HD video on a Power Mac G5 with VLC. Because of a lack of hardware decoding the CPU activity was 70% and the power draw was so high that the PSU popped after a few minutes.

@IBCShow Glad VLC is so widespread - it makes it less likely GPU makers turn video players into monthly subscriptions. But it's too slow compared to MPV and lacks shaders (e.g. geo distort for projection, simple flip, custom sharpen…).

@IBCShow For those saying the year is wrong on Windows XP: The reason for quoting 1999 instead of 2001 is probably because The development of Windows XP started in 1999. So while it did release 2 years later, I can understand how they at least got 1999.

Here's my conversation all about FFmpeg, the legendary open-source software powering most video on the Internet. In the episode, I talk with Jean-Baptiste Kempf and Kieran Kunhya. JB is lead developer of VLC and Kieran is FFmpeg contributor, codec engineer, and the person behind the now-infamous FFmpeg account on X. VLC (VideoLAN), by the way, is also a legendary piece of open-source software: it's a video player that can open basically anything & has been downloaded over 6 billion times. I think both FFmpeg and VLC are two of the most important and impactful software systems ever created, both open source, and both created & maintained by volunteers: brilliant engineers from all walks of life. Thank you to everyone who contributed to FFmpeg and VLC, and in general to all engineers giving their heart & soul to building systems used by millions (or billions) of people, and often doing so not for money, status, or fame, but purely for the love of building great software and doing good for the world. Thank you to the builders! 🙏❤️ Shoutouts in this chat to John Carmack Andrej Karpathy Elon Musk Tim Sweeney and everyone who is a contributor & fan of open source! It's here on X in full and is up everywhere else (see comment). When we started Score, the standard computer vision tools already existed. About a million people use them every day. Most of those people are still waiting on labels, running training jobs by hand, and watching models fail once they leave the test set. Most of those people are still waiting on labels, running training jobs by hand, and watching models fail once they leave the test set. Most of those people are also still waiting on verified computer vision models, evaluated against real life conditions and ready to be deployed for them to deliver value for their teams, clients or users. Score Studio is the full computer vision path in one place. A team describes the problem. The system can generate the missing scenes, label them, train the candidates, evaluate which ones actually hold, and deploy the winner. Data, labels, training, eval, ship. One loop. If no model exists for that job yet, they can put a bounty on the subnet. Anything from a small vision brick to a full VLM. Miners compete on the task. Only the winning work comes back. Same path for software agents. Any agent can call it. Built to be fully agent-accessible. Built for the people who already do this work: computer vision engineers and the small teams around them in plants, warehouses, farms, robotics, sport, and security. And for the agents those teams will run. That is the part that changes the job. Not another training screen. The stretch that used to take a lab and a calendar, footage, boxes, versions, failed runs, a separate deploy project, sits behind one starting point. And if the network needs a new model, that request is part of the same path. We spent more than a year building it. Then we had a choice. Keep it for us, or commoditize the whole subnet and make it available 24/7, in permissionless and open-source way. And we knew we couldn't keep it for us. It had to live on Bittensor. Open source software already showed how this should work. Infrastructure should not sit inside one company. Same idea as open AI before the phrase changed meaning: inspect it, fork it, keep building. That is what SN44 is for. Open vision intelligence, powered by Bittensor. Miners do the work. Studio is how that gets monetized. Profit does not stay in a company account. It goes back into the subnet through buyback and burn. We built the tool we wanted on day one. It will live on the network now, and for ever. Waitlist is open.

Marc Benioff just exposed the biggest hypocrisy in the AI boom. The companies building the AI that’s supposed to kill software are some of Salesforce’s largest customers. Benioff: “The AI companies love our products and they can’t buy enough of them. They’re some of our largest customers now: Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Amazon, you name it.” Let that land. The most advanced AI labs on earth. The companies with more engineering talent and compute than anyone. The ones building the technology that analysts say will make traditional software obsolete. Still buying traditional software. At scale. Benioff: “No one has a company that’s running entirely on a large language model because it’s not real.” Not because they haven’t tried. Because an LLM is not a foundation. It’s a feature. Benioff: “Yeah, Minority Report, I watched the movie. Great guys, fantastic. But I’m in the present-moment reality right now. We’re living in this world. This is 2026.” The analysts writing reports about fully autonomous AI companies have never had to run one. Benioff is running one of the largest enterprise software companies on earth. The gap between those two perspectives is where billions of dollars are being misallocated. Benioff: “How are we doing our financials, our HR, our customer information? How are we doing all of these aspects of our business?” A neural network that hallucinates cannot execute a financial transaction that has to be right every single time. Cannot secure customer data with zero tolerance for error. Cannot provide the determinism that every real business runs on. Benioff: “We need the determinism, and the programmability, and the security, and the sharing.” AI doesn’t replace those requirements. It sits on top of them. Benioff: “I think the software industry is going to be bigger and broader and do more this year than ever before.” The future isn’t AI replacing software. It’s AI making software exponentially more powerful. The smartest people building the future already know this. They’re the ones still buying the software.

WHAT IS AN AI "SOFTWARE FACTORY" AND IS IT HYPE (31 MINUTE BREAKDOWN) I think it's a silly name for a genuinely USEFUL idea! A software factory is 5-6 markdown files that sit next to your code and tell your agents how you like to work, so you can build high quality apps 24/7. It's going viral because AI coding has a trust problem. The model can build the feature, but with no structure around it you end up babysitting the agent, wondering what changed and hoping it didn't break something important. So you build with agents the same way a factory builds physical products! 1. Each feature gets its own station, which in software means its own branch, so multiple agents can work at the same time without stepping on each other. 2. The build station gives the agent rules for how to write the code, because "it works" is very different from "a developer could open this repo next month and understand what happened." 3. The proof station makes the agent show evidence. Screenshots, videos, speed numbers, before-and-after states. It has to prove the thing works instead of saying it works. 4. The review station runs the work through a code review agent, and if it doesn't clear the bar, it goes back through the line. 5. Then you show up at the end to merge. For a 100+ years people have run production this way, and it worked because the structure is good. The full episode on what’s a software factory is NOW live on The Startup Ideas Podcast (SIP) 🧃 with the wonderful Micky Watch: So is it hype?!? I don't think it is, because of what it does to your output! WITHOUT a factory, you build ONE feature at a time and you're the bottleneck at every step, prompting, checking the diff, testing it yourself, hoping nothing else broke (spoiler alert it often does). WITH a factory, EACH feature runs in its own isolated copy of the app, so you can have 10+ of them going at once, and each agent has to prove its own work and pass a code review before it ever reaches you. Instead of supervising the work, you're APPROVING finished work that already has evidence attached. REALLY interesting to see how work with agents is evolving to be….well, similar to working with people!

This is where I have to share my raw feelings about Rivian software currently on R1. The software experience they have created is good. It’s their own, with their software stack that they control. With that said, we have to stop making excuses for longstanding bugs. Like Quinn Nelson had posted about long ago, having to do multiple Resets, logins and out to get core functionality to work is not the experience we should be having. I know Rivian and Wassym do not want this. I also know they are working on R2 stuff as well. As a person who has spent real money on 4 Rivian’s with 3 R2 reservation between me and hubby, we are huge fans. Have helped many become Rivian owners as well. But the long outstanding bugs are starting to boil over. It’s dragging the software reliability down. Apple Music has been in Rivian vehicles for just about 2 years now. We are past the stage of it being “new”. Spatial Audio is a key music feature, and for me, and plenty of others, you have to turn that off sometimes just to get music to play. I shouldn’t have to do that. Plus, you can’t change that feature while the vehicle is in drive. So then you have to pull over and fiddle with it just to get it work and sometimes it doesn’t. Rivian assistant can’t do it either. Among other issues, like HVAC preconditioning, unstable cabin temps, GPS locking issues, profile switching not getting right or switching profile after the driver has gotten in, mobile app live activities not functioning properly, and more. The live activities is important, because we don’t have a notification for charging start stop/complete except for charging complete on DCFC, so on a level 2 charger, I don’t know if there is an issue with charging if the live activities don’t appear. Same for HVAC if it’s not showing up I have to keep opening the app to check to see what the temperature is. If you aren’t going to push me a notification that the cabin is at the temp I selected in favor of the live activities, then the live activities has to work. I could go on, but I really love my Rivian. I love the brand, I love what they want to do. And I think R2 is going to change the market for most things, but I want their focus to be on software and stability. Focus on polish, focus on features that many people want, don’t over complicate those things. Example, valet mode should be here by now that locks down speed acceleration and access to certain parts of the vehicle. Basic Pin to drive, not the multi factors drive one that depends on your phone and vehicle having an internet connection. Speedy, clean, stable software is always a win. I know Wassym Bensaid and plenty of others at Rivian can do this. We have seen it before and seen what they can do. The YouTube app is by far the best app they have added. I haven’t had any issues with it. It’s responsive, and works. Everything needs to work like that across the board. Please guy let me help in anyway I can, I just want the best for you and the community and customers. Let’s focus on that. I know some will see this as a complete complaining post but it’s not. It’s a plead to make the experience better for everyone and making the Rivian software the best software it can be.
