To make a long story short Japan for the most part does not have MANY public trash cans. It's helps cut down on littering. Never mind the fact that they frown upon people that walk around in public eating and drinking stuff in general.

eating or drinking while walking down the street is culturally discouraged and considered bad etiquette. every convenience store has a bin you can use.

One time back in the early 2000s, a friend of mine bought an onigiri at Tokyo Station, we took a train all the way up to Nikko and back and he was finally able to throw it away back at his hotel room that evening.

And the opposite in England where there is a bin around every corner and at evety bus stop, but people are too lazy to use them and litter everywhere.
