Patriarchy, emotional unavailability & misogyny exist everywhere, but they don’t manifest the same way. Black masculinity in the west was shaped by very specific conditions. Ignoring that context and treating the fallout like any other group is profoundly disingenuous.

It ignores the dynamics within the group. Black women can be hurt differently when harm comes from black men because there’s an expectation of shared culture, understanding and solidarity. Calling it “generic male behavior” misses that entirely.

If the answer is just “men will be men”, there’s no room to examine the pressures black women face, from the “strong black woman” expectation to the pressure on black men to be hard & aggressive. You can’t critique a problem by flattening it into generic behavior.

I can 100% attest to these issues making Black men hard to date. I *briefly* dated one man who had several of them: enmeshed with his single mom, threatened by me professionally and intellectually, no male friends/mentors. He was emotionally immature and I hope he got therapy.

Men are the ones expected to initiate marriage, so bragging about your rates just means you asked. Plus, mass incarceration drastically shrinks the pool of BM, giving remaining BM demographic leverage. A skewed ratio and popping the question isn't proof you’re easy to love.
