Some of the roads Londoners use every day still follow routes laid out by the Romans nearly 2,000 years ago. That’s something worth remembering in London because so much of the city you see today was built over whatever came before it. The Romans established Londinium around AD 47. By about AD 200, they had surrounded it with a defensive wall roughly two miles long and six meters high. Parts of it are still standing. Near Tower Hill, you can see Roman stone surrounded by traffic, offices and the Tower of London. Elsewhere around the City, pieces survive in places you could easily pass without noticing. Beneath Bloomberg’s headquarters are the remains of a Roman temple dedicated to Mithras. It was discovered in 1954 and eventually reconstructed on its original site. Today people head to work above a place where Londoners were worshipping a Roman god more than 1,500 years before the Bank of England existed. Even some of the street names have been hanging around for centuries. Aldgate, Bishopsgate and Newgate all take their names from gates that once provided entry through the old city wall. The gates are long gone, but London never bothered changing the names. Then there’s the Great Fire. It started on Pudding Lane in 1666 and burned for four days, destroying much of the City. Christopher Wren became a major figure in the rebuilding that followed, designing St Paul’s Cathedral and dozens of churches. The Monument still stands near where the fire began. Climb its 311 steps and you’re looking out over the part of London that burned. A short walk away is St Dunstan in the East. The church was damaged during the Great Fire, repaired and then badly hit again during the Blitz in 1941. Much of it was never rebuilt. Today the remaining walls surround a public garden. Trees grow through old stone openings. People working nearby eat lunch on the benches. You can still hear the traffic outside. It’s worth stopping for twenty minutes. Westminster Abbey carries another part of the story. Every coronation since 1066 has taken place there, and inside is a wooden door dating to the 1050s that is believed to be the oldest surviving door in Britain. Of course you should see the famous stuff. Big Ben. Parliament. The Tower. Buckingham Palace if it’s your first time. Just leave some room between them. Walk through the City before it gets busy. Look at the churches squeezed between office towers. Pay attention to street names. Walk beside the Thames instead of taking the Tube every time. Stop for a pint somewhere along the way. London gets much more interesting once you start noticing how many older versions of the city are still mixed into the current one. They don’t repeat “Allah is the greatest” and “There is no god but Allah” five times a day in Arabic for the whole street to hear. One is neutral sound. The other is a public declaration of religious supremacy and the rejection of every other faith. Ben nailed the difference. I’ll say it louder: You want to pray? Do it in your mosque! Do it in your home! Do it quietly like the rest of us!! But don’t turn our public streets and sidewalks into your personal broadcast system!!! Canada was built on Judeo-Christian foundations. Since my last campaign to be Mayor of London three years ago, the city I love has descended even further into chaos and has become a truly terrifying place to live. 🗡️ Knife crime has skyrocketed by over 49% since the current mayor was elected, with over 1,000 murders committed on his watch. 🗣️ Our free speech has been violated by a combination of woke Silicon Valley technocrats, and a government who thinks it’s OK to tell our citizens what they can and cannot say. 🏦 Our financial institutions, once the envy of the world, are now censoring people’s right to banking services, and denying them the opportunity to invest in cryptocurrency and the blockchain. 💰 And our Mayor’s appalling new ULEZ travel taxes, fraught with misleading pollution claims, are punishing our poorest citizens. The truth is that since 2021, I’ve seen the place I call home descend into an Orwellian nightmare of censorship, unbanking, violence and punishing taxes. And it’s little wonder that Londoners are demanding change. Our stewards will be waiting at Stamford Street to organise everyone for the march into Whitehall. For those local to London, please make your way to Stamford Street by the easiest and safest route possible (please refer to map for direction) and be there from 11:00 AM. The walk from Blackfriars takes just over 15 minutes. From there, walk over Blackfriars Bridge, turn right, and follow the A3200 straight to the bottom end of Stamford Street (SE1 9NN). Our stewards will be waiting at Stamford Street to organise everyone for the march into Whitehall. For those local to London, please make your way to Stamford Street by the easiest and safest route possible (please refer to map for direction) and be there from 11:00 AM. The walk from Blackfriars takes just over 15 minutes. In 1976, AC/DC were still trying to make their name in the UK, and somebody caught this incredible little piece of rock history on the streets of London. The interview was filmed around Covent Garden for the Australian music show Countdown. Bon Scott does most of the talking while Angus Young and the rest of the band wander through London with him. Bon jokes that AC/DC are better than the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, talks about finding inspiration by keeping his eyes and ears open, and Angus jokes about making enough money to buy Big Ben. They even introduce “Jailbreak” before heading into a nearby pub. There’s nothing polished about it. That’s what makes the footage so good. Shatak, a film marking 100 years of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, is now out and it is a powerful glimpse into a century-long journey of dedication and service. Founded in 1925, the RSS began as a small initiative with a big idea: nation-building through character-building.
