It happens in the Ashanti region, Central, Eastern and Western region, among others. It basically means mining without a license, often carried out in rivers , forests and other protected areas. The consequences of galamsey are serious because it leads to water pollution, destruction of farmlands, and loss of biodiversity. Mercury and cyanide, chemicals often used in the process, contaminate rivers and waterbodies, making them unsafe for drinking and farming.
