That makes it clear what was the goal of the "special military operation" back in 2022. I think that's why they aimed straight at Kyiv. The goal was to force a government change in Ukraine, to replace President Zelensky with someone who would basically be Putin's puppet and turn Ukraine into a vassal state, more or less like Belarus. All of what came after (I am oversimplifying, I know) came from Putin's need to find excuse after excuse for his failure to do that back then, so that he can keep clinging to power (and life, maybe).

No Ukraine president has an authority to give away Ukraine land, it isn't his to give even if he wanted. Russians are used to their own country leadership having disregard to its own constitution, but it won't fly in Ukraine, won't be recognized by others.
