Sumaúma tree (Ceiba pentandra) is one of the true giants of the tropical world, and in the Amazon it often rises above everything else in the forest canopy like a skyscraper. In the Amazon rainforest, it can reach heights of around 70 metres (sometimes even more in ideal conditions). At that height, its crown emerges above the main forest canopy into full sunlight, which is why it’s called an “emergent” tree. One of its most striking features is its enormous buttress roots. These wide, flaring roots spread out at the base like stone wings, helping to stabilise the tree in shallow rainforest soils where deep anchoring isn’t possible. In the Amazon, these roots can be tall enough for a person to stand inside the gaps between them.

Majuli, a river island on Assam’s Brahmaputra, is known for its Vaishnavite monasteries. On thin sheets of bark from the Agarwood tree, or ‘Sanshi’ as it is locally known, artists illustrate scenes from ancient texts including the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. At the forefront of preserving this craft is third-generation artist Mridul Barua. Along with his wife Julie, he trains students, ensuring that this art reaches next generation.

The Angel Oak is a massive, oak tree on John’s Island, near Charleston, SC. This beautiful tree is estimated to be 400-500 years old, though some estimates are up to 1,500 years old. The tree is 66.5 ft (20 m) high with a circumference of 28 ft (8.5 m) having a canopy that covers over 17,200 square ft (1600 m squared) with branches that stretch out to provide shade. Its longest branch is 187 ft (57m). This tree is known as the largest live oak east of the Mississippi. This major landmark tree is the centerpiece of a public park, named for its former owners, the Angel family, and is a symbol of the Lowcountry’s endurance, with a history that include surviving hurricanes and floods.
