Tom Holland says Zendaya was the “obvious” choice for MJ after her first audition for Spider-Man. “She was the only person auditioning for MJ, and it was such a home run.” “I was so blown away by how unique her performance was.” “As soon as she left the room, there was a unanimous decision that she was our MJ.” “I’m obviously very happy that she came in and tested that day.” “She’s fantastic.”

Zendaya says bringing her mom to work backfired because she ended up in tears while watching her and Tom Holland as Spider-Man and MJ Zendaya: "Remember that scene? My mom was there and she was crying. Watching us."" Tom Holland: "Oh, yeah. Why did you bring that up?" Zendaya: "Because I was saying it's like a family event. It was like my mom was literally on set." Zendaya: "My mom came, it was bring your mom to work day. So she was there laughing, crying, going through all the emotions" Tom Holland: She sat down, she was like 'What are you shooting today?' We were like, 'Buckle up?'"
