Western Mining Companies In DRC Kick Against Government's Deadline To Give More Value To Congolese People On January 30, 2026, the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) issued a 6-month deadline to all mining companies operating in the country to fully comply with its Mining Code. This code mandates that these companies set aside a little more of their equity for the Congolese people whose resources they are raking in billions of dollars annually extracting. Yet for these exclusively Western companies, this policy is apparently asking too much. And given the West’s history with Africa, this should come as no surprise.

A WHOLE WEEK after the WEDDING, some people are still talking about it… And, for some, their preoccupation is the WEALTHY BLACK FOLKS who attended the wedding & gifted. It is lost to many that one of the results of the sanctions & economic isolation that followed Zimbabwe’s land reform was the RISE of the black capitalist class. Almost EVERY INDUSTRY in Zimbabwe is now dominated by black Zimbabweans. Mining produced the likes of Scott Sakupwanya… Energy produced Dr Tagwirei… Telecoms produced Strive Masiyiwa … Transport & Logistics gave us Tino Machakaire…. just to mention a few. Under President President of Zimbabwe, the government embarked on massive infrastructure projects and the tenders went mostly to local companies. The owners of these companies became wealthy, & so did many in the value chains. The legalisation of small scale mining in Zimbabwe created THOUSANDS of millionaires especially in the Gold Sector. In Agriculture, hundreds of thousands of Zimbabweans are producing Tobacco and earning a decent income. We have also seen folks like PS George Guvamatanga rise to become the LARGEST DAIRY FARMER in Zimbabwe. Add to that, the money flowing into Zimbabwe from the diaspora is oiling the economy by creating more demand for goods and services. Those who are entrepreneurial are capturing this money into their pockets and getting richer and richer everyday. The reality in Zimbabwe is that a black man can turn VERY WEALTHY if they are determined to. But we still have Zimbabweans who frown upon this reality. They invent all sorts of excuses to justify their own lack and vilify those who made it. How can you get rich when you have been programmed to think it’s impossible? How can you get wealthy when you think money is dirty? How can you get wealthy when you think it can only happen through Kuromba, Juju, or corruption? In many ways, it is these mindsets & ingrained cultural beliefs that keep many black Zimbabweans at the bottom. A good presentation here!

THIS morning l left the Mining Town of Phalaborwa in Limpopo Province of South Africa after 6 days of providing an essential & critical technical service… I learnt several things about how mining can be effectively transform the lives of communities living adjacent to the mines. In Phalaborwa there is Foskor Mine & Phalaborwa Mining Company which employ thousands of people directly & indirectly… Here are a few things they do right: 1. For highly technical positions like Engineering & Artisans, & Managerial Posts, the companies are allowed to advertise & hire anyone from anywhere. 2. For general work & other positions that do not require special skills, there is a Community Forum responsible for selecting employees who get hired by the mines. These employees are taken from the townships & villages around. 3. The companies provide Learnerships to people from the surrounding communities selected by the Community Forum…. The beneficiaries of these learnerships get employed at the mining companies or they can use the skills elsewhere. So the companies are helping to skill the locals. 4. The PCF (Phalaborwa Community Forum) is a POWERFUL Group that ensures that the interests of the community are prioritised. The group can mobilise protests that disrupt mining operations IF they feel that the companies are neglecting the community. It is the PCF that approaches the mining companies with requests for funding community infrastructure like schools, clinics, & roads. 5. The Phalaborwa Mining Company (PMC) is now controlled by Chinese Investors and the only reputation they have is PAYING GOOD SALARIES… I never heard anyone speaking badly against the Chinese Investors. Despite the Great Works of the Community Forum, there are other people in Phalaborwa who feel that the Community Forum is led by corrupt people who ask for bribes to guarantee employment at the mines…. That said, the Community Forum remains an effective tool for safeguarding the interests of the community. I think President President of Zimbabwe’s govt can adopt a similar approach. Instead of leaving Cashvists like Farai Maguwu to go around harassing Mining Investors, Community Forums can be formed. The Members can include MPs, Councillors, Chiefs, Headmen, Opposition Politicians, Civil Servants in the area, & Ordinary Citizens….. The Community Forum will act as the bridge between the Community & the Mining Companies. Jamwanda

Zimbabweans are beginning to push back against Chinese occupation of their ancestral lands, which have been handed over by corrupt ZANUPF politicians in exchange for bribes, kickbacks, and personal enrichment. A recent example took place in Mount Darwin, in the northeast of the country, where locals dismantled the fence around land that had been illegally parcelled out to the Chinese. They stood their ground even when soldiers were deployed to intimidate them, showing that fear is beginning to give way to resistance. In Zimbabwe, it has become routine for the military to act as private security for Chinese interests, a stark reminder of how deeply corruption has penetrated both the political elite and the armed forces. Beyond Mount Darwin, communities across the country have witnessed similar abuses. In Mutoko, Chinese granite mining companies have dispossessed villagers, leaving behind environmental destruction while exporting raw stone abroad. The same story is told in Hwange, where Chinese coal mining operations have polluted water sources, threatening both human life and wildlife. In Chiadzwa, the diamond-rich fields once promised to uplift Zimbabweans were looted in partnership with Chinese companies, leading to the infamous disappearance of US$15 billion in revenue, while locals remained mired in poverty. Zimbabwe’s sovereignty and natural wealth are being traded away for the benefit of a few in ZANUPF, while ordinary people pay the price. Villagers lose their land, rivers are poisoned, and workers are abused, often under the watchful eye of soldiers meant to protect citizens, not exploit them. The pushback in Mount Darwin is therefore a significant moment and a reminder that ordinary Zimbabweans are no longer willing to quietly accept the auctioning of their heritage to foreign powers propped up by a corrupt regime. Zimbabweans are among the poorest people on earth, yet they live in a country overflowing with natural wealth. Diamonds, gold, platinum, and fertile land should have built hospitals, schools, and a functioning economy, but instead, that wealth has been looted by the political elite and their foreign partners. Ordinary citizens are left destitute, unable to access even the most basic services like healthcare, while their leaders flaunt stolen riches abroad. In Mashonaland Central, where the latest confrontation happened, the poverty is even more stark. Children are forced to learn under trees because there are no proper classrooms, no desks, and no books. This is in a province that has been bled dry of its resources, yet nothing has been reinvested into the lives of the people who live there. Watching students huddled under trees, trying to get an education in such conditions, is a painful reminder of the betrayal of Zimbabwe’s promise.

This was last night on Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show. He compared Donald Trump’s attempt to control America’s central bank, the Fed, to how Zimbabwe’s central bank has long been controlled by politicians, explicitly likening Trump’s actions to Robert Mugabe’s capture and control of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. While Zimbabwe was used on this show a few hours ago to demonstrate the madness of Donald Trump, it is important for us as Zimbabweans to realise how far we have sunk. Our central bank, our presidents, and our political elites are now known for having stripped the central bank of its independence and for making purely political and not monetary decisions. When this becomes material for comedy, you can imagine how it is discussed in boardrooms and other serious spaces where economic decisions are made in America and across the world. We really have to change. I do not know what it will take for Zimbabweans, especially those with the power and influence to bring change, to realise that the country’s image has been severely damaged internationally by the actions of corrupt politicians. We need to do better.

Zimbabwe has been ranked as the most miserable country to live in based on an economic index that considers its 95% unemployment rate, the highest inflation in the world, bank lending rates, and GDP. Does Emmerson Mnangagwa not get briefed on this, so that he understands what the world sees when engaging with Zimbabwe? What is worse is that Zimbabwe has topped this miserable index chart for three consecutive years. This has been driven mainly by state corruption which is central to Mnangagwa’s repressive rule. Currently there are over 75 prodemocracy political prisoners in jail in Zimbabwe, imprisoned for just meeting to commemorate the day of the African Child and some like Jacob Ngarivhume for just speaking out against corruption. It means Zimbabweans are being send to jail for exercising rights in their constitution, what a miserable place to live in where you get jailed for doing legal things!

TRUTH ABOUT UKRAINE The UK & Europe's support for Ukraine is not to protect Ukrainian freedom or sovreignty. It is to transfer public money to private wealth held by asset management companies like Blackrock via arms & weapons manufacturers. The £22 Billion that the UK will be "giving" to Ukraine goes to companies like BAE Systems and MBDA UK, who make enormous profits. Ukrainians gets weapons to fight with Russians and both of them destroy the country. Once Ukraine is decimated, its resources will be harvested and deals made with multinational companies for mineral, energy and military contracts. In January 2025, the UK negotiated the colonial style 100 Year Partnership Declaration to give deals to British companies for Ukraine's military, energy and minerals sector, ensuring that Ukraine's resources get harvested. UK's ongoing support for Ukraine is to secure those deals. The people that tell you that the conflict is about Ukraine's freedom are either stupid or willfully blind because they can't digest how badly their own government would lie to them so badly. But this a tried and tested formula for colonisation and has been going on for centuries, most recently in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Syria. The only novel thing about Ukraine is that it is Europeans colonising other Europeans. Please stop repeating the lies that your governments are telling you about the reaons for this war. In Zimbabwe, Hon Prof Mthuli Ncube & others in govt are EXPLAINING loadshedding… telling the people that the LOW WATER LEVELS in Kariba are to blame. In Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema took MPs to “SEE” for themselves… Both govts are not THINKING OF SOLUTIONS, just “WAITING FOR THE RAIN.” Zimbabwe has LOTS OF COAL, so much coal that the country can go for 300 years using coal to generate MORE THAN ENOUGH electricity. It’s just lack of political will…. The average African politician doesn’t understand the importance of having electricity… they don’t understand that it is the advent of electricity that drove Western nations into BIG WEALTH & POWER… without enough electricity, African countries will remain economic DWARFS… By now, we should have seen SADC countries working together to increase electricity generation… Some in Zimbabwe are busy chanting silly slogans yet loadshedding is wreaking havoc…. I don’t have a problem with President President of Zimbabwe ruling even until 2050 IF HE IS DELIVERING! IF HE IS SOLVING PROBLEMS faced by ordinary people. He is surrounded by slogan chanters who are doing nothing, the 2030 thing can’t stand in the status quo. They MUST DELIVER NOW… what will they be doing in 2030 if now they are not delivering? People want solutions, not silly excuses from govts… the people of Zambia & Zimbabwe MUST DEMAND ELECTRICITY, not to listen to politicians giving dumb explanations

In Zimbabwe, Hon Prof Mthuli Ncube & others in govt are EXPLAINING loadshedding… telling the people that the LOW WATER LEVELS in Kariba are to blame. In Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema took MPs to “SEE” for themselves… Both govts are not THINKING OF SOLUTIONS, just “WAITING FOR THE RAIN.” Zimbabwe has LOTS OF COAL, so much coal that the country can go for 300 years using coal to generate MORE THAN ENOUGH electricity. It’s just lack of political will…. The average African politician doesn’t understand the importance of having electricity… they don’t understand that it is the advent of electricity that drove Western nations into BIG WEALTH & POWER… without enough electricity, African countries will remain economic DWARFS… By now, we should have seen SADC countries working together to increase electricity generation… Some in Zimbabwe are busy chanting silly slogans yet loadshedding is wreaking havoc…. Yesterday in Marondera during the Presidential Borehole Drilling scheme official unveiling, citizens expressed a clear and compelling vision: their focus is on development, not elections. This sentiment reflects a growing recognition that sustainable progress is achieved through investment in infrastructure, services, and livelihoods rather than prolonged political contestation. Having lived in the United Arab Emirates, I have witnessed firsthand how a nation can achieve remarkable transformation by channeling its energy into development. The UAE has built world-class infrastructure, diversified its economy, and elevated the quality of life for its people — all with limited emphasis on electoral processes. Their model demonstrates that when governance is anchored in delivery and efficiency, citizens benefit directly. For Zimbabwe, the message from Marondera is instructive. Communities are calling for reliable water supply, modern infrastructure, healthcare, education, and economic opportunities. These are the foundations of dignity and prosperity. Elections are important in any democracy, but they should not overshadow the urgent need for tangible progress. Policy must therefore prioritize development as the central pillar of governance. 𝐄𝐔𝐑𝐎 𝐆𝐎𝐋𝐃 𝐋𝐀𝐔𝐍𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐒 𝐒𝐌𝐀𝐋𝐋-𝐒𝐂𝐀𝐋𝐄 𝐆𝐎𝐋𝐃 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐉𝐄𝐂𝐓 𝐈𝐍 𝐘𝐔𝐌𝐁𝐄 Yumbe District has taken a major step in Uganda’s mineral development journey with the launch of the Euro Gold Small-Scale Mining Project, strengthening efforts to formalise artisanal and small-scale mining and promote responsible exploitation of Uganda’s mineral resources. State Minister for Mineral Development Phiona Nyamutoro said the launch demonstrates Government’s commitment to developing the mineral sector under NDP IV. She noted that Yumbe and Zombo are among gold-rich areas in West Nile and urged Euro Gold to comply with the law, create jobs and internships, support communities and progressively move into medium- and large-scale mining. She reaffirmed Government’s resolve to close illegal mining operations and called for improved safety, insurance and healthcare for miners. Euro Gold CEO Ben Feni said the company spent more than two years surveying and exploring the area before securing its mining ground. Its operations cover about 79 square kilometres across West Nile, with Yumbe as its pioneer site. The company targets production of at least 20kg of gold per week and plans to establish a processing plant to strengthen traceability and accountability. “We are going to build our nation,” Feni said. Assimwe Kenneth, CEO of the Uganda Association of Artisanal and Small-Scale Miners, commended Euro Gold and Government for supporting formalisation. He urged communities to keep children in school and out of mining, encouraged the use of PPE and called for accessible insurance schemes for small-scale miners. Tusigwire Julius, Head of the Mineral Police Unit, said the unit, established in 2017, is responsible for combating illegal mining, mineral smuggling, fraud and forced labour. He revealed that more than 15 illegal mining sites have been closed this year, while raising concern over recent deaths in illegal mining sites. Eng. Grace Nakku, from the Office of the Commissioner, Minerals and Energy Department, said responsible mining is key to attracting investment and growing Uganda’s mineral sector. She advised that only people aged 18 and above should enter mining sites and encouraged Euro Gold to scale up while continuing to support artisanal and small-scale miners. The launch reinforces Government’s commitment to a formal, safe, responsible and investment-driven mining sector that creates jobs, supports communities and contributes to Uganda’s economic transformation.
