Remembering Zimbabwe’s Joshua Nkomo, who died of prostate cancer on 1 July 1999 at the age of 82 at Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare. Joshua Nkomo was a towering African political figure in Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle, revered as a father of the nation and a symbol of unity and resilience. A trained social worker and nationalist leader, he co-founded the Southern Rhodesia African National Congress in the 1950s and later led the Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU), fighting for the emancipation of black Zimbabweans from colonial rule. Nicknamed “Father Zimbabwe,” Nkomo was known for his calm demeanour, inclusive vision, and unwavering commitment to justice. Excerpts from CJ Malaba's biography as read by Deputy Chief Justice, Honourable Elizabeth Gwaunza: -During the time that he was Judge of Appeal and a Deputy Chief Justice, he was also a Judge of the COMESA Court of Justice for more than a decade (2005-2016). -Mr Justice Malaba is an accomplished human rights defender who has taken advantage of his judicial posting by delivering judgments that protect the fundamental human rights of the vulnerable including women, children and persons with disabilities amongst others. -Since his appointment as the Chief Justice, he has led the judiciary and the Judicial Service Commission in taking deliberate steps meant to enhance access to justice for the people of Zimbabwe through the construction of courthouses in various parts of the country, simplifying court rules so that they are easily understood by ordinary persons and increasing the number of judicial officers both in the magistracy and superior courts. -Under his stewardship, the courts in Zimbabwe are moving towards digitisation through the Integrated Electronic Case Management System (I.E.C.M.S). The first phase of the I.E.C.M.S. was launched on 1 May 2022, at the Constitutional Court, Supreme Court and the Commercial Division of the High Court. -This July 2025, under his leadership, the Judicial Service Commission launched the I.E.C.M.S. in the magistrates courts. This phase marks the final stage of the digitisation of Zimbabwe's courts. -Mr Justice Malaba has participated in various training programmes both in the country and the region. #Zimbabwe #ZimLestWeForget One of the country’s most eminent sons and hero who died in the war and whose remains are at the National Shrine is the Chairman of the ZANU, Cde Herbert Wiltshire Pfumandini Chitepo. Cde Chitepo died on #18March1975 in #Lusaka, #Zambia, when a bomb planted on his car shattered the morning at 150 Muramba Road in Chilenje South. This was after his fiery language and his role in developing Zanu’s new military strategy inevitably made him a target for assassination by the Rhodesian regime. Cde Chitepo and Silas Shamiso, one of his bodyguards, were killed instantly. Sadat Kufamadzuba, his other bodyguard, was injured. Although his murderer remains unidentified, Rhodesian author Peter Stiff says that a former British SAS soldier, Hugh Hind, was responsible. Cde Chitepo was born in Mutasa District, Manicaland Province on June 15, 1923 - the year that the British South Africa Company, a legacy of Cecil John Rhodes, lost its grip on the country they called Southern Rhodesia. Cde Chitepo was the first black citizen of Rhodesia to become a barrister. This was where he met his wife Victoria a heroine who was also interred at the national shrine. After teaching for a year, he resumed his studies to graduate with a BA degree from Fort Hare University College in 1949. In 1954, Cde Chitepo became the then Rhodesia’s first black lawyer. On returning to Rhodesia in 1954, he practised as a lawyer and defended African nationalists such as Ndabaningi Sithole. In 1961, he served as legal adviser to the late Father Zimbabwe, Dr Joshua Nkomo, founder of the Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU), at the Southern Rhodesia Constitutional Conference in London. In May 1962, ZAPU was banned because of militarism and Cde Chitepo was persuaded to go into voluntary exile to escape possible detention. He became Tanzania’s first African Director of Public Prosecutions. The Sithole and Nkomo factions of ZAPU split apart in July 1963. Dr Nkomo’s supporters founded the PCC-ZAPU and favoured a more militaristic approach. At Zanu’s first congress in Gweru in 1964, Cde Chitepo was elected in absentia as national chairman. He held this post until December 7, 1974 when the Lusaka Accord was signed. In 1966, Cde Chitepo decided to leave his prestigious job in Tanzania and move to Zambia to devote himself full-time to reorganising the party and beginning the armed struggle in earnest. It was a decision that separated him from some of his contemporaries in academic institutions and in comfortable jobs who had decided not join nationalistic politics. It was also a role that radicalised his views. Under the guidance of Cde Chitepo as Zanu’s most senior leader, the party shaped its military wing, #ZANLA, under the command of national hero Cde Josiah Magama Tongogara. Both Zanu and Zapu chose to leave the country and reorganise and form military armies outside Rhodesia, although they chose different countries to set up their base. ZAPU based itself in Zambia where it organised #ZIPRA. They allied with the Soviet Union and organised a vanguard of highly trained soldiers. In 1972, he co-ordinated war operations with FRELIMO and opened up the north-eastern region of Zimbabwe as a new and effective war frontier. Cde Chitepo was reburied at the National Heroes Acre on August 11, 1981. In the country’s history of the liberation struggle, Cde Chitepo is known for insisting that the only language the Rhodesian prime minister Ian Smith would understand was violence. “Zimbabwe was taken from us through bloodshed. Prof. Adriano Nuvunga is the director of the Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD), an organisation that promotes democracy and protects human rights in Mozambique. Among the pro-democracy women jailed without trial by Emmerson Mnangagwa is a woman with a one-year-old child at Chikurubi Maximum Prison. Another woman activist was denied the right to bury her child, who died after Mnangagwa imprisoned her. Another female activist, Namatai Kwekweza, was dragged off a plane and held incommunicado for eight hours and accused of committing a crime on a date when she was not even in Zimbabwe. All this is happening in the context of the SADC Summit taking place in Harare this week. The timing of these arrests and torture abuses of pro-democracy activists in Zimbabwe, coinciding with the upcoming SADC Summit, is ironic. It is alarming to see the Zimbabwean regime seemingly cracking down on civil society and opposition voices ahead of a regional meeting that should, in theory, promote peace and cooperation. Professor Adriano Nuvunga's act of solidarity by dressing as a female Zimbabwean prisoner highlights the international attention these issues are receiving. Through your retweets and reshares of these posts, the world is waking up to the terrible situation in Zimbabwe today! It is important for SADC member states to address these concerns and hold Zimbabwe accountable for upholding the principles of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. As the summit approaches, regional leaders must demonstrate their commitment to these values and work towards a peaceful resolution that respects the rights and freedoms of all Zimbabweans. Muthanyi Robinson Ramaite is a former student activist, political organiser, public servant and business leader whose political consciousness was forged during the height of the anti-apartheid struggle in the 1980s. Honourable Members, The Constitution empowers the President to appoint the National Director of Public Prosecutions without stipulating any criteria to that effect. Although there are no requirements in law to do so, I decided to constitute a panel to assist in the process of appointment of the next NDPP, in terms of calling for nominations, shortlisting candidates and interviewing the shortlisted candidates. This is similar to process followed when I appointed the current NDPP, Adv Shamila Batohi. This process is transparent and helps to build public confidence in a critical office. I selected a panel that would combine a variety of skills and experiences. These include public service administration, financial management, legal and jurisprudence, administration of justice, and promotion of equality and human rights. The panel I constituted that includes representatives from the National Executive, Chapter 9 institutions and legal bodies. I chose the heads of certain Chapter 9 institutions for the panel because these are independent bodies established to support and protect South Africa's constitutional democracy, the rule of law and human rights. They are required to always act impartially and subject only to the Constitution and the law, ensuring their decisions are made without fear, favour or prejudice. They are therefore well positioned to understand the qualities and capabilities expected of an NDPP. I have included legal practitioners in the advisory panel so that candidates are evaluated by people with experience in the legal and criminal justice system. In addition to their legal acumen, candidates must be able to demonstrate qualities and capabilities relating to leadership, strategic management, financial management, ethical leadership, and a broad understanding of the justice system. Based on their assessment, the panel will submit a shortlist of recommended candidates to me for consideration and appointment as empowered by the Constitution and the NPA Act. #RamaphosaQandA

As part of the efforts to allow the movement of residents and international organizations to the southern Gaza Strip for their protection, in recent days the transfer of a storage facility containing rare archaeological artifacts, mosaics, and pottery of the Christian community in the Gaza Strip was made possible. This was carried out in coordination with COGAT's Coordination and Liaison Administration (CLA) for Gaza, in cooperation with an international organization. The unique historical artifacts were transferred to a safe location in coordination between officers at the CLA for Gaza and the international community.

Some former Zanla commanders and senior army officers within the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) are grumbling behind the scenes that another ex-Zipra commander General Emmanuel Matatu has been put at the helm of the army following the retirement of General Philip Valerio Sibanda, another Zipra heavyweight. President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is also commander-in-chief, presided over Matatu's investiture at State House in Harare on Monday. Sibanda retired on November 21. A military source told The NewsHawks: "Some Zanu PF leaders and government officials wanted a former Zanla commander, not Matatu, to take over because an ex-Zipra commander, Sibanda, had been in charge. They were raising issues of the need for equality, equity and rotation which they argue must now be enforced in the ZDF. The unified ZDF command was introduced when the late former Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) commander retired General Solomon Mujuru retired in 1992. The late retired General Vitalis Zvinavashe was the first commander of the unified ZDF structure. He was succeeded by retired General Constantino Chiwenga, now one of the two Vice-Presidents. Chiwenga was succeeded by Sibanda. So the argument was Matatu cannot replace Sibanda since they were both Zipra. However, Mnangagwa rejected that and appointed Matatu for ethnic, regional and political reasons. Mnangagwa preferred Matatu as a former Zipra commander to counter Chiwenga's residual influence in the army. Matatu is also from the Midlands and is viewed as a Karanga, just like Sibanda, making them Mnangagwa's homeboys. While Sibanda has a Ndebele surname and Matatu speaks Ndebele, they are viewed as Karanga. Ethnicity and regionalism still play a huge and influential role in local politics, especially in Mnangagwa's power calculus and administration." Another source said the issue has fueled tensions as Mnangagwa uses the military to protect himself, keep Chiwenga at bay and manage Zanu PF succession politics. Chiwenga, who helped Mnangagwa to seize power through a coup in November 2017, had the military leverage to become the next President, but his ambition has been thwarted, at least for now. Mnangagwa has taken control of the army by putting his own loyalists in charge to block Chiwenga, ignoring the Zanla and Zipra dynamics. Zanla was the military wing of Zanu during the liberation struggle, while Zipra was Zapu's armed fighting force. Zipra and Zanla spearheaded the liberation struggle mainly from Zambia and Mozambique, respectively. In 1980, ZNA was formed by integrating the three main armed forces of the war: the Rhodesian Army, Zanla and Zipra. This was a key priority for the new government under the late former president Robert Mugabe to create a single, unified military force after independence in 1980. The integration process was difficult and complex, involving disbandment of the old army and formation of new units with a mix of personnel from all three groups, overseen by British Military Advisory and Training Team whose role was to mediate between the three forces, as well as to train ZNA officer corps. A Joint High Command (JHC), the old Ceasefire Commission, chaired by Mnangagwa, was in charge of the process. Rhodesian army commander Lieutenant-General Peter Walls was appointed JHC commander. He was charged with the responsibility of implementing the new defence policy, and managing the integration and conventional training process, while defending the new vulnerable government. He worked with Mujuru and Zvinavashe from Zanla and the late Zipra commander Lookout Masuku and intelligence supremo Dumiso Dabengwa who were later arrested and detained on false charges of a coup plot, together with Zapu leaders and other Zipra commanders. Masuku eventually died in chains at the behest of Mugabe. It was key to show unity at the top echelons of military command to facilitate the same process in the middle levels of the army hierarchy, as well as among the rank-and-file during integration.
