Commuters Caught in Crossfire as PSV Operators and Boda Boda Riders Clash in Kamulu Over Transport Routes Residents of Acre Tano in the satellite town of Kamulu are raising alarm over rising cases of harassment and violence allegedly perpetrated by boda boda operators who are resisting the introduction of public service vehicles (PSVs) on the route. Commuters say boda boda riders, who charge between Ksh 200 and Ksh 400 for short distances, have violently opposed matatu services that offer a more affordable alternative. PSV operators attempting to establish routes in the area have reportedly been attacked, with passengers and crew members injured in the process. Despite notifying the police about the security threats, residents claim that law enforce officers have failed to intervene effectively. "Good morning, kindly hide my ID. I wish to bring to the attention of concerned police authorities and NTSA regarding harassment and attacks against residents of Acre Tano in Kamulu by boda boda operators. About a month ago, PSV operator Atomic Shuttle began operating a route from Bus Station in town to Kamulu Acre Tano through Kanisani Road, bringing much-needed and affordable transport to the residents. They charged Ksh 150 for the trip. However, boda boda operators, who charge residents between Ksh 200 and Ksh 400 from Kangundo Road at Kanisani to Acre Tano, reacted violently. They attacked passengers and crew of Atomic Shuttle, blocked the public road at Kanisani Stage, and disrupted the transport arrangement, leaving residents vulnerable to the high prices set by boda boda operators. As a result, a trip that initially cost Ksh 150 now ends up costing Ksh 350 one way to town. Yesterday, Forward Sacco Shuttle began operating in the morning. However, in the evening, the Forward Shuttle was attacked, passengers were assaulted, and a tout was beaten and injured by boda boda operators. This happened despite prior notification to the police requesting protection for both residents and the vehicle. Currently, the buses only operate one trip in the morning at 5 am and one trip in the evening. The Ruai and Mbili Mbili police seem powerless to stop these attacks. We need help. In the early morning hours, residents also have to contend with hyenas, dust, and poor road conditions. When it rains, the roads become impassable, and boda bodas charge Ksh 400 for a 4km distance, with some riders choosing not to operate at all. Our riders work hard to support their families and keep our economy moving. They should not be trapped in unfair lending arrangements that turn their livelihoods into endless debt. At the same time, we must empower our boda boda riders with the right information and financial literacy so they can identify predatory lenders and choose friendlier, transparent and properly regulated financial institutions.

The officers, who operate in plain clothes and use an unmarked white Nissan March (registration number KDK 368V) have allegedly been targeting riders along Kileleshwa Ring Road, Mugoiri Road and Mandera Road, areas frequently used by boda bodas. Multiple riders who have fallen victim to this scheme have detailed how the officers stop them, accuse them of fabricated traffic offenses, seize their keys and then demand cash before releasing them. The affected riders say the officers do not identify themselves and use intimidation tactics to force compliance. One rider who fell vicim narrated to us how he was ambushed by the officers near Mugoiri Road, where they accused him of violating traffic rules and forcibly took his keys. When he attempted to question their actions, they demanded money before handing them back.

Road Safety, Growth and the Future Fighting over stages and competing among ourselves is only making the boda boda industry more difficult and risky. Yes, taking risks is sometimes part of earning a living, but we must also remember that life is more important than any stage or any fare. As boda boda riders, we should support one another instead of constantly arguing and fighting over spaces. Road safety should come first—respect other road users, follow traffic rules, and avoid unnecessary conflicts that can put lives at risk. Personally, I believe you are not supposed to remain in one place for your entire life. We are meant to grow, learn, and move forward. Maybe one day I will leave the boda boda industry and pursue something different. Whatever the future holds, my commitment to road safety and protecting lives will remain. 🦺🏍️🙏
