I'm hearing similar disturbing things about the Fantastic Four's base of operations.

Was there any ounce of evidence for this or did they invented out of thin air?

I would wager the WH “leaked” the story to Times of London who laundered in American press. It’s a pretty transparent and cheap maneuver

I will never understand why so many people went along with what were obviously lies, even at the time.

There were lots of steady state reasons (general corporate media bias, patriotic fervor) but also 9/11 was a tremendously traumatic event, along with the anthrax attacks. People were scared and our govt was doing everything in its power to make us even more scared, all the time
