This is not the first time Ukrainian forces have had to save civilians in Russian-occupied Oleshky from a humanitarian catastrophe. After the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam in June 2023, flooding devastated the town. Russian occupation forces blocked evacuations and humanitarian aid, leaving residents trapped without food or drinking water. Under the Russian fire Ukrainian forces rescued civilians on both banks of the Dnipro river and delivered food and water by drones to survivors trapped in occupied Oleshky.
