One thing that people have spoken of everywhere we went is the toll this war is beginning to take on the people of Ukraine in PTSD and other mental health conditions. We’re only just beginning to grasp the likely scale of it – and how long-lasting the effects may be. While it was wonderful to see people in Britain rallying with support and hospitality for Ukrainians in the first phase of this war, we must now recognise that we need to be in this for the long haul, that’s one of the messages I will take away with me. The whole pattern of life and support is changing from immediate crisis to long-term help. This is not likely to stop soon. Read more:

We will never forget that Hamas started this war, and it is Hamas that holds up peace today. However, lost in the focus on the painfully long war in Gaza is the vast improvement in Israel’s regional security since October 7. Because of their strength, the Iranian nuclear program is badly damaged, Hezbollah is largely destroyed, Hamas is almost functionally dead, and the Assad regime is gone. Israel is wise to stay strong despite the world preferring it be weak.

As someone who came from Venezuela to this country, whose family lived through the Holocaust, who loves this country with an abiding sense that it's given us everything, I have an obligation to go around the country and warn people that what's happening in this country is the precursor to the demise of this country. Antisemitism is a manifestation of deeper corrosive problems in our own society. It's the rot that is eating away at the wooden framework of our house. And if we love America, then we can't turn our back to the reality that in the past, where Jews have thrived, society has thrived. And where Jews have been persecuted and Jews have been killed, society was on its way out the window. For example, look at the Russia of Kishinev in 1903, one of the most horrible pogroms of the beginning part of the 20th century. 14 years later, 1917, that society no longer exists. The tsar and his whole family are executed, and a huge civil war erupts in Russia, changing the face of Russian society and much of the world forever. Think of the Germany of Kristallnacht of 1938. Seven years later, it was gone. Throughout history, we see that countries that allow the rot of antisemitism to metastasize through the framework of society, are actually societies that are crumbling from the inside.

Secretary Hegseth just briefed the public on the state of the war on Day 4. Based only on that talk, you'd think the US had already won the war and victory is just around the corner. The reality is different. Iran knew from the outset they had a major dearth in firepower as compared to the US/Israel, but it is apparent that they calculated they could endure our fire, return enough missiles and drones against our bases, Israeli cities, and targets in our allies in the region, to drag a war out longer than we could sustain that fire. This is crucial to understand: Iran knows it is in a struggle for its literal life; the life of its leaders, of its government, its military, and its people. They appear to have calculated that as soon as the first US/Israeli missile fell on them, they were all in. Everyone knew Israel and the US had profound firepower to dump on Iran, so none of this could be a surprise. Hegseth argued this morning that the volume of fire from the US and the paucity of volume from Iran indicated we were winning. But its a little premature, on day five, to declare anything over, as the Secretary clearly implied. But what he and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff DIDN'T say may be more important than what they DID say. How will this war come to an end? If you destroy enough planes, missile launchers, and navy boats signal a victorious war? Look at the profound pounding the Houthis have endured from the Saudis, the Israelis, and the Americans for the better part of 15 years, and still they exist.
