The Qur’an… When Gaza Rises from the Rubble In northern Gaza, where the scars of war remain on the streets, the walls, and the hearts, 1,400 memorizers of the Qur’an gathered in a scene that tells the story of a people. This is not merely a gathering of students of the Qur’an. It is a declaration that the Qur’anic mission in Gaza is alive and unstoppable, and that the message carried by this people is stronger than every attempt to break or erase it. They tried to destroy the homes and extinguish the light of this land, yet they discovered that the true light does not live in walls — it lives in hearts. In Gaza, wars may destroy mosques and schools, but they cannot destroy the Qur’an when it lives within people’s chests. Here in northern Gaza, 1,400 memorizers stand as a message to the world: that a people who carry the Book of God will never have their spirit broken, their mission silenced, or their identity erased. These are not just images. They are proof that Gaza, despite genocide and destruction, still rises with the Qur’an and writes its future through it. Here is Gaza… When the walls fall, the Qur’an remains.

A lot of international journalists across the continent and beyond have been asking me whether the opposition in Zimbabwe would vote in support of Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 when it comes to Parliament. For those who have been asking that question, and for others who had the same question in mind, this video is your answer. This is an opposition Member of Parliament speaking, praising President Mnangagwa and supporting his political agenda. Susan Matsunga was elected in 2023 to represent Budiriro North (Mufakose). She does not belong to the group of opposition Members of Parliament that were imposed by Sengezo Tshabangu, the charlatan who worked with others to disrupt Parliament and effectively hand ZANUPF a two-thirds majority. She belongs to the Nelson Chamisa group, the group that came through Bereka Mwana. When we criticised Bereka Mwana at the time, we were insulted. I remember explaining that Bereka Mwana was bringing in people who were bootlicking the leader of the party but did not necessarily have the substance and gravitas required to become Members of Parliament or oppose bad governance. So the more you bootlick the leader, the better your chances of getting into Parliament. She is a clear example of that. She was as militant as they come in defending the leader when he was making his festival of mistakes, and here you have her now supporting President Mnangagwa and his agenda. The problem that we have in Africa, particularly in Zimbabwe, is that people follow personalities. They do not follow ideas. When an empty vessel is a personality they like, they are happy to sink with that empty vessel. If someone comes with ideas but they do not like that person, they would rather discard the good ideas than support them. I want to make this prediction, and you can hold me to it. If it does not come to fruition, I will be very happy. ZANUPF is assured of power for at least the next 18 years. Until Zimbabweans change their attitude of supporting personalities over ideas, ZANUPF will remain in power for the next 18 years. We do not know what will happen after that, but for now, that is the trajectory. Some of you will ask why I say 18 years. It is because we are in 2026, and if ZANUPF gets Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 passed, it means the current president will remain in power for the next four years until 2030. The president who comes after him will then have two seven-year terms, that is 14 years. Add the four years from Mnangagwa, and that gives you 18 years. We do not know what will happen after that. Even if Mnangagwa is removed, for example through a coup, it will still be ZANUPF that remains in power. Until Zimbabweans understand that the enemy is not the person they do not like but who comes with good ideas, and that they must support ideas over personalities, ZANUPF will remain in power. Until Zimbabweans understand that politics is not like football, where you die on the hill of the team that you support, ZANUPF will remain in power. Until Zimbabweans understand the importance of working together, regardless of whether they like each other, as seen in the idea of a team of rivals associated with Abraham Lincoln, ZANUPF will remain in power. Until those who tell the truth are listened to, ZANUPF will remain in power. As long as people applaud and ululate those who tell them what they want to hear instead of what they need to hear, ZANUPF will remain in power. I want to leave you with this food for thought. In 2000, when Robert Mugabe and ZANUPF were pushing for a new constitution, the then opposition leader stood firm, campaigned across the country, and slept in people’s homes, in huts, mobilising against that constitution. It went to a referendum, and Robert Mugabe and ZANUPF lost. The opposition leader and his team managed to convince Zimbabweans, and they won. That moment showed what leadership, conviction, and grassroots mobilisation can achieve when people are organised around an idea. Today, I do not know who you can point to as the main opposition leader capable of doing the same, and that in itself is something Zimbabweans must seriously reflect on.

Years of pain, death and loss of loved ones. But these are also years of incredible heroism and valor, the fight for life and freedom. Years of destruction and loss, betrayal and lies from those who were believed and trusted. But these are also three years of victories and liberation, loyalty and struggle for truth and goodness. Years that showed the true face of many people. Where some sided with tyranny, terror and the aggressor. And others remained on the side of the people who did not attack anyone, but simply wanted to live peacefully on their land, fighting for their future and the security of Europe, for their land and their home, for their country, for their freedom, against Russian fascism and the plague. War is the most insane and terrible thing that people will do. And only an absolute madman or a demon in the form of a man who has long lost any human qualities in himself can wish for war. But the fight against evil teaches us a lot. War teaches you to appreciate and love more. War teaches us to distinguish good from evil. War shows the real faces of people. War brings out the worst in some people, but it also brings out the best in others: valor, honor, kindness. On our part, an aggressive war should never be justified, where someone else's freedom is trampled, where someone else's lands and home are seized. Where innocent people are deprived of life. But a defensive war, where people defend their freedom, their home, their future, their children, is something completely different. And such a defense of life and freedom is the duty of the entire free world, if honor and dignity are not an empty place for it. War is not a Hollywood action movie. It is death, pain, destruction. And when some in the world seek justification for this evil, they try to close their eyes to it or justify the aggressor. When there is no determination to fight this evil. It only breeds new wars and new evils. You can have a lot of money, you can have political and social influence. You can promote your propaganda and buy everything and everyone. But you can never buy the truth, honor and dignity for money if you don't have it. And history will forever remember those who supported terror, invaders and murderers. And history will forever remember who was on whose side. And I don’t believe in the proverb “History is written by the winner”. If this winner is on the side of evil, then he can distort this history for a while by writing his own propaganda and lies. But sooner or later the truth will come out and fall into place. This is how it has always been and this is how it will always be. The truth will always sooner or later prevail over lies. And this real story will be remembered forever. Just as those who stand on the side of evil, who committed thousands of war crimes, genocide, terror and murder, will be remembered. Just as she will remember those who stand on the side of good, the defense of freedom and life, on the side of truth and honor. And who retained his conscience and dignity. All the darkness of the universe cannot extinguish even the smallest candle. Always remember this. The world is not perfect. And this world will never be perfect. But for now there are those who are ready to fight for goodness, freedom, love, truth and justice. This world still has a chance to exist.

Eight Children… and the Story of an Unbreakable People | When Life Triumphs Over Siege Scenes documenting the return of premature babies to their mothers’ arms… Moments beyond value—moments that healed broken hearts after unimaginable pain. This was not just an event. It was the result of immense sacrifices made by healthcare workers and our people— through their blood, bodies, hunger, and displacement. Sacrifices beyond comprehension. These moments were written with the blood of martyrs, the suffering of the detained and tortured, and the patience of those still imprisoned— waiting for a moment like this… a moment of life. We are not speaking only of children, but of a nation’s future being reborn. Of a Palestinian child whom the occupation tried to erase, yet returned as living proof that life defeats extermination. Today, they have returned… Eight premature babies who once hovered between life and death, now telling a story of faith and resilience. In November 2023, under the siege of Al-Shifa Medical Complex, water, electricity, and oxygen were cut off. There were 33 premature babies in incubators. Under bombardment, they were moved in extremely dangerous and harsh conditions in search of safety. We wrapped their fragile bodies in foil to protect them from the cold. We deprived ourselves of clean water to give them a chance to live. Some were lost… others survived. Their images were captured and shared, shaking the conscience of the world. After ten days, they were evacuated to Egypt in a perilous journey amid tanks and soldiers. We paid a heavy price to stay by their side… and never abandoned them. Today, they return—alive— to their mothers’ embrace, declaring to the world: That the will to live is stronger than the will to kill. And that Gaza—despite all pain— continues to create dignity, and write victory, by the will of God.

BDS is what would have made the difference, turning an empty gesture - the recognition of Palestine - into an ethical, useful, game changer. Hello, I am Yanis Varoufakis here to discuss the (hugely) belated recognition of the State of Palestine by a number of Western governments – Britain’s, France’s, Canada’s and Australia’s. If only they had done this many decades ago, maybe Israel’s ethnic cleansing of a people whose existence Israel did not recognise, on a land that Israel was keen to expropriate from these unrecognised people, maybe that ethnic cleansing project would have been halted - maybe it would not have morphed into the genocide that is unfolding with untold cruelty as we speak. Is it not a good thing that the governments of Britain, France, Canada and Australia were forced by public opinion, by sensational losses in voter support, to recognise the State of Palestine. I suppose it is a good thing. But, friends, make no mistake. I am very much afraid that Keir Starmer, Emanuel Macron, Mark Carney and Anthony Albanese did not recognise Palestine so as to ensure that it comes into existence as a real, a sovereign state for a people Israel has put on death row but only so that they do not actually do what they can to end the genocide and to make the Palestinian state a possibility. In a nutshell, these Western governments, after decades of complicity, are suddenly falling over themselves to perform a performative act in a manner that does nothing to bring about that which they proclaim: a functioning Palestinian State. So: Let us not applaud them. Let us not be fooled by them. Theirs is not an ethical awakening. It is merely the calculated management of a genocide they are doing nothing to stop. It is hypocrisy polished to a fine sheen, designed not to end the suffering in Gaza, but to sanitise their role in perpetuating it. On the one hand, we observe the grand theatre of great power diplomacy. The press conferences, the solemn declarations, the recognition of a state that exists on paper. Meanwhile, on the ground, the very foundation of such a state – its people and its institutions – are being systematically erased. These governments—the Starmer, the Macron, the Albanese, the Carney administrations—they want you to be distracted by their "brave" and "principled" stand while they remain complicit in the war crimes, in the ethnic cleansing, in the genocide. And why now? Why, after the tens of thousands dead, after the schools and hospitals turned to rubble, after thousands of wounded children were forced to survive alone, without their families who now lie buried under blocks of cement? Because global outrage has reached a boiling point that can no longer be contained by their usual pro-Israeli propaganda. Their recognition of Palestine is a pressure valve, designed precisely to defuse that outrage, to save Israel’s legitimacy, safe in the knowledge that Israel will continue, with their tacit support, to block each and every move toward a viable Palestinian state. They are recognising a Palestinian state while tacitly conniving with Israel's leaders to ensure it never comes into being. How? By actively refusing to take the one set of actions that has a proven historical record of ending oppression and Apartheid: Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions on the perpetrator. Thankfully that’s not all. Mercifully, something else is going on. While Western leaders perform their diplomatic pantomime, hundreds of people are sailing right now in the Mediterranean Sea. The Global Sumud Flotilla. A flotilla of teachers, journalists, activists, dreamers, parliamentarians, carrying with them the global majority’s commitment that Israel’s Siege on Gaza, that the planned and meticulously implemented genocide of Palestinians will be terminated – that it will not continue in our name – that the impending acts of piracy by the Israeli state will be exposed for what they are: misanthropic violations of minimum ethical standards, of International Law. Israeli propaganda, echoed by its apologists, claims these brave souls are "choosing to enter a war zone, to violate prohibited security zones." This is a shameless lie. The flotilla's ships are not entering a war zone. They are heading towards a site of genocide on a land that Israel is illegally occupying—a fact confirmed by the International Court of Justice, which in June 2024 ordered Israel to vacate it. So, I ask you: if Starmer, Macron, Carney and Albanese really wanted to end the genocide, what would they do? They would not be issuing statements. They would be sending a naval vessel to protect the flotilla! They would be enforcing international law. But they will not. Because their recognition is an empty gesture, and actual solidarity requires a break with organised misanthropy and with the arms dealers who fund them and their political campaigns. This duality, this chasm between Western governments’ words and deeds, is the essence of their hypocrisy. They grant a piece of paper called ‘statehood’ with one hand, while with the other they continue to arm, fund, and diplomatically shield the very power that ensures this statehood remains a cruel fiction. They remind me of a monument I once saw in Canberra, Australia’s capital. Walking from the High Court to the National Library, you stumble in a unique monument — a monument celebrating a High Court of Australia judgment. On it are inscribed the magnificent words of Sir Gerard Brennan from the Mabo case: “The common law of this country will perpetuate injustice if it were to continue to persist in characterising the indigenous inhabitants of Australian colonies as people too low in the scale of social organisation to be acknowledged as possessing rights and interests in land.” A magnificent sentiment. A legal revolution. But what followed? Words on a monument. The recognition of native title was granted, but the power structures, the economic dispossession, the systemic inequality—they were largely left intact. The recognition became a shield *against* more substantive justice. This is the playbook of imperialist white settlers. Recognise a right in theory to avoid implementing it in practice. This is what is on offer today for Palestine. A state recognised on an imaginary map in a European capital, while on the ground, the apartheid reality is reinforced with every bomb, every bullet, every checkpoint. The key, the only key that unlocks the door to freedom, is not recognition. It is BDS: boycott, divest and sanction. And its goal? Its goal must be to bring about equal political rights from the Jordan to the Mediterranean. Recognition would have mattered at Oslo. It was the leverage that was squandered. Now, in the absence of any peace process, it is merely symbolic. And in its current form, it is worse than symbolic—it is a pacifier. We must understand the fundamental truth, so elegantly captured by that Mabo judgment but so tragically ignored in its aftermath: “Violent instability is baked into any system where one side has power and rights and the other has none.” You cannot have peace, you cannot have security, for anyone—Israeli or Palestinian—under a system of apartheid. The violence of the occupier begets resistance; the violence of the oppressed is then used to justify further, overwhelming state violence. It is a vicious cycle engineered by the powerful. So, when these Western leaders herald their recognition as a progressive move, ask them one question: Where are the sanctions? Where is the arms embargo? Where are the trade restrictions? Where is the protection for the flotillas? Until they answer you convincingly, their words are not just hollow. They are weapons. They are the grease for the machinery of genocide. They are the modern-day equivalent of the colonial administrator who acknowledges the humanity of the native in a London speech, while signing the order to clear their land. Let us not let them get away with it. See their recognition for what it is: a desperate attempt to save a crumbling system of oppression, not to end it. Our duty is clear. To amplify the call for BDS. To stand with the flotillas. To demand not words on paper, but justice on the ground. The Palestinian people do not need their hypocritical recognition. They need their freedom. And freedom only comes when the cost of oppression becomes too high for the oppressor to bear.

🚨 Urgent Appeal from Gaza – After the Destruction of the Last Water Station, Thirst Is Chasing Life 🚨 After the destruction of the last water station in Gaza, thirst is no longer a future threat—it has become a present reality, slowly crawling over exhausted bodies and pulling life away from dry mouths in silence. 📌 Today, 180,000 liters of clean water were distributed to displaced families in Gaza—180,000 lifelines in a place where the last water station has been destroyed. In Gaza, no one dies suddenly. People dry out slowly. Breath suffocates, throats burn, and bodies collapse hour by hour because a single drop of water could not be found. Children in Gaza are no longer asking for toys, schools, or dreams. Their question today is far simpler—and far crueler: Will we drink? Will water arrive before their small bodies dry out? Will they open their eyes tomorrow… or close them quietly forever? These children carry jerrycans heavier than their own bodies, walking between tents, rubble, and dust, when they should have been carrying notebooks and pencils, running freely without fear. But the world chose a different path for them—a path called thirst. The elderly collapse because their bodies can no longer endure. Dizziness comes before the fall. Hearts weaken with every hour without water, and every step becomes a final attempt to stay alive. Families sit for long hours around empty containers, staring at them in painful silence, waiting for a single drop that could mean one more day of life—or an ending without farewell. Mothers divide one cup of water among their children, knowing that this cup carries an impossible decision: who drinks now, and who must wait—and who may not wake up at all. This is not emotional exaggeration. This is what is happening in Gaza right now, after water was turned into a weapon and thirst into a slow method of killing that leaves behind nothing but absence. In the midst of this darkness, some chose to be life when it was disappearing: ✨ William Menaker (Will 🦥 Menaker ) 🔥 Felix (GoliathFan1952 ) 🤍 Eyup Lovely (Eyup Lovely ) Because of them, water reached the tents before collapse. Children on the edge of fainting drank. The elderly caught their breath. And mothers cried because the water arrived—not because their children were gone. In Gaza, water is not a luxury. It is not a service. It is the line between a child who lives and a child who disappears in silence, between a mother holding her children and a mother left alone. But the painful truth remains: Water is running out. Thirst does not wait. And every minute of delay may mean another body falling silently. 💧 Your donation today is not ordinary support—it is the cup that may arrive before it is too late, and the reason a child opens their eyes tomorrow instead of closing them forever. 🚨 Donate now—urgently—because thirst does not offer a second chance: In Gaza, people do not die suddenly— they are left to dry out slowly. Be the reason that stops it.

One of the claims I address in my new book, Israel on Trial, is the allegation that Israel has committed genocide. Genocide has a clear legal definition. It means that a country, not individual soldiers, a country has the specific intent to destroy an entire people in whole or in part as such, because they are that people, by killing their members or because of their racial, religious, or ethnic origins. The proponents of the genocide claim have to show that the Israeli government had the specific intent to wipe out the Palestinians of Gaza because they are Palestinians, not because there's Hamas fighters embedded within them, not because they're trying to release the hostages. That's why when you read, for example, the briefing book that the legal team from South Africa submitted at the International Court of Justice, there's no mention of Hamas really. There's barely a mention of October 7th. There's no hostages. It's a fictional world in which there are no hostages, there was no October 7th, there is no Hamas, and there's just Israeli war planes and an innocent civilian population. That starts to look a lot more like genocide if you remove all of the essential elements that are the reality on the ground. How do we begin to analyze this question? The first is historically. We know for example from the Nuremberg trials that this argument that Hamas and its supporters are advancing was already rejected by the original people who tried the original war crimes trial at Nuremberg. The German defense team wanted to advance the defense that you shouldn't be too angry with our people, and you shouldn't think that the prosecution has any moral right to be prosecuting and trying our defendants, because the pilots who were flying over Dresden and Berlin and Tokyo and Hiroshima are equally guilty of these war crimes. And the Nuremberg trials resoundingly rejected that theory and said, "You're not guilty of these war crimes when you're fighting a war of existential survival against a genocidal regime in a war that is defensive in origin, that you didn't start, and never wanted and frankly never expected." But it's much more than that. Israel has fought the most precise, and in some respects the most humane, urban warfare conflict the world has ever seen. And you don't have to take my word for it. Take the HLMG, the High Level Military Group. The HLMG is a collection of high-level officers and generals from almost every Western army in the world. Not Jews. Not Mossad agents. These are generals from America, from Canada, from New Zealand, who all went to Gaza, went to Israel, looked at the evidence, looked at Israel's strike packages, realized that Israel is fighting a war that is essentially run by lawyers. This doesn't appear in the newspapers, but as I can tell you when I lead these judges' trips to Israel, Israel is fighting an almost preposterously Jewish war, where all of the calls of strikes that are not emergent are made by lawyers in the field. This is a reality that must be understood. Israel has a corps of military advocate generals. They're called MAGs. Think about our JAGs, for example, and many of our judges were JAGs, and so the context and the contrast is stark. Military advocate generals are deployed in the field with the commanders all over Gaza and on the Gazan border, and one of the things that you should remember about the military advocate generals isn't just their deployment. It's also that their advice is not precatory. So in the United States, a JAG says to a commander, "You shouldn't strike. That's my advice." But the commander can always override the strike because the advice is precatory. In Israel, the MAG's advice is not precatory. It's mandatory. It's an order that must be followed. Of course, if the commander disagrees, there's a whole appellate mechanism that goes to senior commanders that ultimately could end up in front of an IDF judge. I mean, this is the ridiculously legalistic way in which these Jews fight these wars. And frankly, we have seen, as judges, dozens and dozens and dozens of videos where this plays out in real time. Videos, which somehow don't make it into The New York Times, where pilots are in their planes or flying their drones over clear Hamas targets— terrorists shooting out of a mosque or out of a hospital or out of a UN car. Yes, that happens in Gaza every single day. And the pilot says, "I'm ready to fire." And then something amazing happens, something our American JAG officers are like, "What is happening here?" A nerdy Jewish lawyer comes over the air, the airwave and says, "Hey, what's that 50 yards away on the top right of the screen? Scan over to the top right of the screen." And it's two children playing soccer or three women holding a loaf of bread having a conversation. And instantly it's "Strike canceled. Strike canceled. Strike canceled." Over and over again in Gaza and in Lebanon, legitimate strikes on legitimate military targets that almost any other Western army in the world would take are canceled by Israeli lawyers, international law scholars, because of a concern for the preservation of innocent Palestinian civilian life.

🚨 Urgent Donation for Gaza – After the Destruction of the Last Water Station, Thirst Is Besieging Life 🚨 Yesterday, the last water station in Gaza was destroyed, and from that moment, this was no longer a temporary crisis, but a life being slowly pulled away from dry mouths and exhausted bodies with nothing left to resist. In Gaza, thirst is no longer a possibility or a warning—it is a daily reality that suffocates breath, dries throats, and silences life without noise, while heavy hours pass like a cruel test deciding who survives and who collapses first. Children in Gaza are no longer asking for toys, schools, or big dreams, because all of those words are now far removed from their reality; what they ask for today is only water—water that keeps their small bodies from drying out and gives them a simple chance to open their eyes to another morning. These children carry jerrycans of water heavier than their own bodies, walking between tents, rubble, and dust, when they should have been carrying notebooks and pencils and running freely, but the world chose for them a different path called thirst. The elderly collapse because their bodies can no longer endure long days without water, as heads grow heavy, hearts weaken, and every step becomes a final attempt to stay alive. As a new year begins, thousands of families still live in torn tents, exposed to cold, fear, and thirst, asking not for comfort or a future, but simply to remain alive for one more day. This is my last post on X, and I wanted the last word to be one that matters. The very first commandment God gave in Eden was to multiply and replenish the earth, and the Restoration placed the family at the burning center of the whole plan: the unit of the celestial kingdom, the reason for the temple, the very shape of God's own life. So when a covenant people quietly stop bearing the next generation, they have not merely made the reasonable lifestyle choice the world applauds. They have begun to set down the first and oldest commandment ever given, and a people who set down the foundation should not wonder why the house begins to sink beneath them. The Book of Mormon shows you how it happens, and it shows you in slow motion, over and over, until no honest reader can miss it. A people are delivered and made prosperous. Prosperity breeds comfort. Comfort breeds forgetting. And the forgetting always wears the same face: they come to love the world and its ease more than the covenant and its cost. They set their hearts on riches and on the praise of men, they grow quietly ashamed of the strict and demanding ways of their fathers, and they trade the weight of the covenant for the lightness of the age. The empty cradle belongs to that same trade. Children are heavy, and faith is heavy, and sacrifice is heavy, and everything the covenant has ever asked is heavy, and a people who have fallen in love with their own comfort will not carry what is heavy for long. So do not mistake what the numbers are telling you. The collapsing birthrate of the Saints is not a sociological curiosity to be smoothed over with better messaging. It is the scriptural pattern arriving on schedule, the visible fever of a covenant people grown too comfortable to bear the weight of their own future. A people who will not have numerous children have, at the deepest level, stopped believing the future is worth filling with their faith, and a people who no longer believe in their own future are already in the early stages of not having one. This is the warning the scriptures have been shouting across the centuries, and we have been too soothed to hear it. And yet the warning has always carried its mercy folded inside it. Every cycle in the Book of Mormon that ended in destruction could have ended in repentance instead, and some did, and the difference was never circumstance. It was never the size of the threat or the strength of the enemy or the hardness of the times. The difference was always one thing only: whether a people, warned, would humble themselves before the comfort finished its work. We have been warned. Your prophets at general conference warned you time and time again. Do not forget their words. The cradle is the warning made visible. The only question left is the one the scriptures have put to every people who ever stood where we now stand. Will we turn, and take up the weight again, and build a future worth being born into. Or will we stay comfortable, and go the way of every comfortable people the record has ever buried. That is my last word.

Every year in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, men swing a chicken over their heads and believe they are watching their sins fly away. It is painful to watch because it proves how deep the blindness still runs. It shows what happens when people cling to shadows long after the substance has appeared. And it forces us to say what Scripture has already said with terrible clarity. No ritual can save. No animal can carry away guilt. No performance can wash a conscience. No tradition can stand before a holy God. The law itself condemned every drop of blood that was offered upon that altar because it shouted that something greater was coming. Hebrews 10 says that the sacrifices under Moses were a yearly reminder of sin but never its cure. It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. That is not my verdict. That is God’s verdict. And if the blood of animals could not cleanse Israel when the temple stood in glory, how can the blood of a chicken cleanse anyone today. The only sacrifice God ever accepted is the one He provided. When Jesus lifted the cup and said this is the new covenant in my blood in Luke 22 He declared that the entire system of shadows had reached its end. Hebrews 9 says without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness, but it also says that Christ entered once for all with His own blood and obtained eternal redemption. Not temporary. Not repeated. Final. When He died, the veil of the temple tore from top to bottom. God Himself ripped open the curtain that separated sinners from His presence and announced in one violent act that the old covenant had served its purpose. No more priests standing daily. No more sacrifices reminding you how guilty you are. No more altars waiting for fresh blood. The Lamb of God has come. The true temple has appeared. John 2 says His body is the real temple. The place where God meets man is no longer a building of stone but the crucified and risen Christ. This is why we must preach the truth to those still trapped in rituals. Not out of arrogance, but out of love. Because a man can stand before God with a hundred ceremonies and still die in his sin. But a sinner who comes to Christ with empty hands will be washed clean. First John 1 says the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. Revelation 1 says He loved us and freed us from our sins by His blood. Exodus 12 says when I see the blood I will pass over you. God still sees only one blood. Only one sacrifice. Only one Saviour. And if we remain silent while people chase shadows, we become part of their deception. The apostles did not watch Israel return to the old rituals and stay quiet. They preached with urgency because they knew that no temple can save now. The real temple has already been destroyed and raised again on the third day. There is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. So when you see a chicken swung over a head or sins symbolically transferred in the streets, do not mock them. Mourn for them. Pray for them. Speak the truth to them. Because the Judge before whom they must stand will not ask how sincerely they followed their tradition. He will ask whether they are covered by the blood of His Son. Without that blood there is no hope. With that blood there is no condemnation. Everything hangs on Christ. Always has. Always will.

In Russia, oil refineries are burning, “oil rains” are falling, airports are closing, and the internet is being blocked. Russians are starting to complain - cautiously. Interestingly, when bags with the bodies of their soldiers were sent back to Russia, it did not provoke complaints. But now it’s a different story. Black rain is falling on their heads, services aren’t working, taxes are rising, you can’t call a taxi… Russians don’t like this. At the same time, they don’t blame the direct perpetrators - those sitting in the Kremlin, and first and foremost Putin - but rather local authorities. Because Putin promised them a “great Russia” and victory. So for Russians, war is good - as long as it’s somewhere out there, in Ukraine, in Syria… But when the war comes back to Russia, suddenly it’s not so good. And yet, it’s not Putin’s fault - someone else must be to blame. Let’s take a look at how this could affect the regime. The promise of an untouchable rear is collapsing, and the regime is forced to explain it. For a long time, the regime sold not just “victory,” but also the idea that the war was controlled and would not become a daily threat to Russia itself. When drones reach deep into the rear, striking ports, oil refineries, and military factories, this undermines the image of the state as an all-powerful protector. The old formula was: “we are so strong that the war won’t touch you.” The new one is weaker: “yes, the war affects you, but we are not letting it turn into chaos.” But the second formula is weaker - the more the Kremlin shifts from triumphant rhetoric to justifications about “temporary restrictions for the sake of security,” the more visible the weakness becomes. And Putin knows that Russians do not forgive weakness. Discontent is shifting from the front line into everyday life - but unevenly. For most people, war becomes politically dangerous not when some abstract “military facility” is burning, but when daily life deteriorates. What matters here is a combination of threats: delayed flights are a discomfort people perceive as temporary. But worsening air quality, warnings about toxins, and fear for one’s health - that’s a different, bodily level of threat. After the strike on the Tuapse refinery, authorities warned about increased concentrations of benzene, xylene, and soot, and advised people not to leave their homes. This is no longer an abstract news item about the front, nor propaganda about Russian messianism - it is the invasion of war into the body and the home. The psychological weight of such events can be significant. Loyalty to Putin will remain, but trust in the system’s competence will decline. This is exactly what we are observing now: “the state is working worse than it promised,” “we were not protected,” “we are not being told the truth,” “Putin, help.” But even this forces the Kremlin to publicly explain that outages are temporary and necessary for security reasons. They will assign blame. When authorities cannot ensure the promised sense of safety, they compensate with control and repression. At the same time, the well-practiced mechanism of the “scapegoat” is activated: a local official or a “weak executor” takes the blame, protecting the vertical of power as a whole. There will be no anti-war protest (for now). Russians are not protesting against the war, but against discomfort. The regime will try to redirect anger toward Ukraine, local officials, and will intensify repression. The main risk for the Kremlin is cumulative, not immediate. A single strike rarely changes the political atmosphere. But a series of strikes that regularly disrupt daily life, increase anxiety, worsen the environment, restrict communication, and at the same time contradict earlier promises of “control and invulnerability of Russia,” slowly erodes one of the regime’s key resources - the image of a competent, strong government. The Russian economy is vulnerable, and this vulnerability has a clear source: dependence on the oil and gas sector. It is the export of energy resources that continues to provide key budget revenues. That is why strikes on this sector have not just tactical, but strategic significance. That’s why it should continue.

Ambassador Chas Freeman: Israel Is Worse Than Nazis It’s very clear what Israel wants. It’s made no secret that it wants to depopulate Gaza by whatever means it can, by starving people into leaving, expelling them, or killing them all. And there’s no question that it meets the definition of genocide. They have the intent to destroy an entire people. They have the ability and they are, in fact, carrying out an operation intended to do so. I think it’s also quite clear why Hamas did what it did. This was in the nature of a jailbreak from the world’s largest concentration camp. And having been treated like animals they behaved like animals. What they did was horrifying, it was inexcusable, but it was understandable. The Israeli reaction has been vastly disproportionate and that is Israel’s custom. It tries to react disproportionately in order to intimidate and deter anyone from attacking it. That is not new but what is new are the genocidal statements and proposed emptying of Gaza. 60% of the buildings in Northern Gaza have been destroyed and we know that over 12,000 Palestinians have been murdered by one means or another. Israel has destroyed most of the hospitals in Gaza. It now seems to be working on the schools. So it is totally ruthless and the whole thing is particularly macabre because it is such a vivid reminder of the Warsaw Ghetto, a very parallel situation in which driven beyond any ability to tolerate what was being done to them, the Jewish inhabitants of the Warsaw Ghetto rose against Nazi Germany and the Nazis exterminated them all and leveled the ghetto. One would think that the survivors of that Holocaust and the larger Holocaust in Europe would not wish to repeat a holocaust against another people but evidently, that is expecting too much of human nature. It now appears that much of the killing at the music festival was actually done by Israeli forces who fired indiscriminately at both the Hamas warriors and the milling crowds at the festival. Similarly, some of the major damage in the kibbutzim and the murders of the settlers there were done not by Hamas but by Israeli forces firing tank bullets into houses and hellfire missiles into cars and so forth. So this was a dreadful beginning to what has turned out to be an absolutely nauseating months and a half of slaughter, not finished. The United States has the ability to stop this by halting armed supplies to Israel but does not do that, opposes a ceasefire in support of Mr. Netanyahu’s revenge against the Palestinians, and Mr. Netanyahu, I would remind you, is on record many years ago as expressing hope for a war in which Israel could expel all the Arabs in its midst and seems to be taking advantage of this to do that hoping, I suppose, that his reputation which has been greatly damaged by charges of corruption and by his suspension of judicial independence in Israel, can somehow be redeemed by this act of revenge. Where we are is a very bad place. What Israel is reporting is extraordinarily crude propaganda, some of it obviously, utterly false, and they’ve been caught. Even some of the mainstream media are beginning to report that the Israeli Defense Forces are lying about a huge number of things. Younger people, generally in the West, certainly in my own country the United States, are far more inclined to be sympathetic to the Palestinians than they ever were before. It’s not that they dislike Israelis but now confronted with with graphic images of horror, the murder of 12,000 [Palestinians], they’re not dispassionate. Not only are they demonstrating in all of the world’s capitals for a ceasefire which their governments declined to support for the most part, but social media is now overwhelmingly pro-Palestinian as opposed to pro-Israeli. But I think the Palestinians, generally, have been motivated to remind the world that they exist. That their problems can’t be set aside. The Israeli government, with the connivance of the Biden Administration, and before that the Trump Administration, was making an effort to set the Palestinian issue aside in order to produce Arab-Israeli normalization. And the Palestinians set out with this raid into Israel to demonstrate that that is impossible, that the only way that you can have peace in Palestine is with a two-state solution. And oddly enough, although Hamas, of course, started as a movement funded in part by the Israelis — Mr. Netanyahu has openly admitted that he corroborated with Qatar to fund Hamas in Gaza in order to divide the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza — I think Hamas seized the moment to provoke Israel into doing exactly what Israel has predictively done in order to make it clear to the world that you have to have a two-state solution which had become a talking point. There was no reality to it at all. There had been no peace process for twenty-some years. Now there must be. People have recognized that the one-state solution — which many favored, meaning a purely democratic one-man-one-vote arrangement in Palestine in which inevitably the Jewish population given its higher level of culture, civilization, and finance, would have called most of the shots — is off the table. After all the hatred that has been demonstrated on both sides, coexistence in one state is obviously impossible in Palestine. Two states, however, would give the Palestinians a stake in peace. They have no stake in peace at the moment. They’re like a rabbit being swallowed by some kind of boa constrictor. As time goes on they go farther and farther down the throat of the snake and they’re crying out, and they were doing so at a pitch that, apparently, no one internationally could hear. And now their cause has been dramatized. We can’t have a resolution of what is going on now that takes the form of another expulsion of Palestinians, more tolerance of massacres, the condoning of genocide... and I think those in the West, including President Biden, who has been prepared to give Israel a pass on these issues, are beginning to pay heavily in terms of their political prestige in their domestic politics. Settler colonialism invariably leads to some attempt at genocide. That was the case in the United States, Canada, and Australia. It wasn’t the case in New Zealand because the Māori were too tough. It wasn’t the case in South Africa because the Zulus, and other South African blacks, were too tough. It wasn’t the case in Kenya because, eventually, black Kenyans rose up in the Mau Mau movement, which was itself a horror, but it did result in a separation from the colonial rule of the British. The same thing could happen. Now the difficulty of all this is obvious in terms of the fact that you’ve got an Israeli cabinet that is the most determined, genocidal cabinet the world has ever seen, and I don’t excuse the Nazi cabinets from that comparison. The overt statements of genocidal intent are unmistakable. There’s no effort, as the Germans did make, to conceal what is in store for the Palestinians. There’s no fake camp for Jews like the one the Nazis set up to bring the Swiss Red Cross in to show how wonderful they were treating the people they had taken away from their homes. No effort whatsoever of that sort, just bombing and strafing and murder on the ground. Israel appears to be paying quite a heavy price for that in terms of combat losses, but, of course, is not reporting accurately what is happening.

Full Translation of the Testimony: Peace and God's mercy be upon you. This is Mohammed Hajj Abu Obeida from the city of Latakia. I want to speak about the violations and crimes that have taken place over the past two days in Banias, Jableh, and various other regions. Today, I speak not only for myself but on behalf of every honorable person who rejects killing and injustice—on behalf of every fighter who has remained true to their oath and has not betrayed the teachings of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. My message is directed to His Eminence Sheikh Abu Muhammad al-Jolani, Ahmad al-Sharaa, and to all military commanders. Sheikh, the killings we are witnessing—the slaughter of innocent civilians in their own homes—does our religion command this? Are these truly the teachings of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace? Does his guidance instruct us to drive people from their homes and execute them in cold blood? By God, this is not why we took up arms. We did not fight for this. Had we been in the wrong, we would never have taken up arms in the first place. We rose up because we were oppressed, because we sought justice—not to displace families, commit murder, and destroy livelihoods. Yet now, we see factions entering Alawite villages, expelling civilians, and killing them in cold blood. These are the remnants of the regime’s brutality, not the actions of true mujahideen. Are the people who remained in their homes not safe? By God, after the battle ended, I was shocked to see the videos documenting these violations. I bear witness before God to the righteousness of the Public Security Group—they were committed to protecting civilians. But Sheikh, we demanded justice. I am one of those who called for it. As a military officer and a member of the elite forces, I have insisted that those who committed these crimes—those who killed based on sectarian hatred—must be held accountable. Sheikh, we must purify our army. When mercenaries came from Libya and Nigeria, they did not fight as true mujahideen—they entered homes and slaughtered civilians. This is not the teaching of the Messenger of Allah. This is not our faith, nor our religion. This is not humanity. We are a people of mercy, a people of peace. We fight those who fight us. We take up arms only in battle. But we do not kill people who are simply living in their homes. No, by God, Sheikh—this is not why we fought. Sheikh, I appeal to you as Abu Obeida. I beg you—hold these criminals accountable. They have no place among us. They must be expelled from our ranks. The evidence is clear, documented in both audio and video. Sheikh, we followed you because we believed in your righteousness, your faith, and your devotion to God. We stood behind you because you are a just and honorable man. But today, all our efforts, all our sacrifices, are being undermined by these crimes. We are not murderers. If we kill an innocent person in their home, we are no better than the oppressors we rose against. By God, our hearts break at what we have witnessed. The Public Security Group has done its duty to protect civilians, but these atrocities—especially by the Hamzat and Amshat factions—have shattered everything we stood for. They looted, murdered, and destroyed lives. And why? Simply because their victims belonged to the Alawite sect? By God, this is not our religion. I urge everyone to spread this message far and wide. These criminals must be held accountable. They cannot remain among us. Our army should be a force that protects the people, not one that slaughters them. Sheikh, you must take action. You must issue an order to hold them accountable, so that the world knows we do not condone such acts. May God's peace, mercy, and blessings be upon you.

In Al-Kurmuk, the UAE-Backed Rapid Support Militia Continues Its Pattern of Destruction: Looting the Health Insurance Center, Leaving Civilians to Rebuild, as the Army and the People Confront the Impact of Destruction Sponsored by One of the World’s Richest Countries At the Health Insurance Center in the city of Al-Kurmuk, another familiar face of the crimes committed by the Rapid Support Forces militia appeared in the towns and villages it entered. Looted rooms, scattered papers, an empty pharmacy, and a medical laboratory stripped of its contents. The scene sums up what has happened in many parts of Sudan, where the militia enters public service institutions, leaves them in ruins, and forces civilians to confront the aftermath of destruction once the fighting stops. The man’s voice in the video carries clear pain as he walks through the center. He speaks with the bitterness of someone seeing a public effort lost before his eyes, and a health facility that once served people turned into a place of loss and looting. He speaks as someone who knows the center, its people, and its value, as if every destroyed room reminds him of those who worked there and those who once waited there for treatment and medicine. The Health Insurance Center in Al-Kurmuk was one of the city’s important health facilities. The Health Insurance administration had made major efforts to establish and equip it, providing medical equipment and devices, along with a fully equipped dental clinic, so it could offer healthcare and treatment services to the people of Al-Kurmuk and the surrounding areas. The center had also received praise from the senior administration of the fund because of the standard of services it provided and the quality of care it offered to patients. Then the militia came, extended its hand toward that effort, looted what it could, and destroyed what it left behind. Years of work and construction were lost in moments of recklessness, and the citizen was left to pay the price. A looted pharmacy means a patient searching for medicine and finding nothing. An empty laboratory means a medical service has stopped. A destroyed center means that a city and its surrounding areas have lost a facility that supported people in times of illness and need. This behavior is familiar from the Rapid Support Forces militia. In every city and village it entered, the same scene was repeated in different forms: homes looted, facilities vandalized, institutions destroyed, and the daily lives of civilians targeted. Schools, health centers, markets, and service facilities became targets of looting and destruction, as if the aim was to break society and strip it of the foundations of life. In Al-Kurmuk, the video reveals part of the cost that awaits Sudanese people after the militia leaves any area. Liberation opens the road for life to return, while also exposing the scale of destruction that requires difficult work. Civilians need more than security. They need medicine to return, laboratories to function again, pharmacies to be restored, facilities to be repaired, and trust in public service institutions to be rebuilt. At this stage, the responsibility of the army and the people moves along the same path. The Sudanese army, after fighting the battle of liberation and paying with the blood of its soldiers to recover towns and villages from the militia’s grip, opens the way for civilians to return and protects what remains of state institutions. Along that same path, the Sudanese people stand with patience and determination, each contributing what they can to rebuild what has been destroyed, clean public facilities, revive essential services, and repair the damage the war has left behind in healthcare, education, markets, and daily life. As Sudanese people try to rise from beneath the rubble, with limited resources and an unbreakable will, the world stands witness to the catastrophic impact of the support provided by the UAE to this militia. One of the richest countries in the world is, through that support, contributing to the destruction of a country exhausted by war and poverty. Yet this destruction has failed to break the will of the Sudanese people or take away their ability to endure, rebuild, and rise again. #Sudan #RSFIsATerroristOrganization #UAEKillsSudanese #UAESponsorsTerrorism

As a resident of Donbas, I was asked to tell about the beginning of war in Donbas in 2014. But this is a long story. So I'll do it in a few threads over the next few days. I realized that before I talk about the beginning of the war in Donbas, I need to talk a little about the period before the war. In particular, about Yanukovych's term (because during his term, Russia started taking over Ukraine) and about the Revolution of Dignity. After all, for those who do not know this period, the following story may be incomplete. In addition, Russian propaganda also pays attention to this topic. I have repeatedly seen how Russian propaganda, through its Western servants, distributed the map of the presidential elections in 2010, in which Ukraine is divided in half. At the same time, they claim that this is a map of the pro-Russian population and that these regions should be given to Russia. Yanukovych focused more on economic issues and his program was populist. He spoke "for everything good and against everything bad." And the majority in his program could find something of their own and interpret it in their own way. As for the Ukrainian language, his program stated that it remains the only state language. And the Russian language and other languages have the right to exist in Ukraine. That is, he repeated what was stated in the constitution and how it worked before and after his tenure. Yanukovych's pre-election program was not pro-Russian, he spoke Ukrainian and never advocated joining Russia before the election Yanukovych positioned himself as a politician who is friendly to Russia but who will cooperate closely with Europe. That is, he showed some neutrality between East and West and his neutral path. Like once President Kuchma. And the majority of Ukrainians (until 2014) supported it. The majority of Ukrainians did not support the idea of joining NATO. After all, when we gave up nuclear weapons, the USA, Britain, Russia and other countries guaranteed our sovereignty and territorial integrity. As history has shown, these hopes were in vain and Russia violated the agreements. But some Ukrainians remembered well the history of the extermination of Ukrainians by the Russians and were worried about Russia's attack on Georgia in 2008, which showed that Russia has not changed and will repeat its fascist-imperialist path. They turned out to be right. The share of these Ukrainians, in my subjective opinion, was 20%-30%, including me. It should be noted that these are people who did not want a war with Russia and did not plan it. But based on historical and modern realities, it was suspected that Russia would try to seize Ukraine or part of it in one way or another. And when Yanukovych finally canceled the European integration processes in November, people took to the streets both those who were against the cancellation of this process and those who feared that Russia, through Yanukovych, had started the process of absorbing Ukraine. There was another group of people who opposed the government because of great corruption and the transformation of the state into a totalitarian one. Or those that came out due to a combination of these factors. However, the final factor that pushed the protests into the Revolution of Dignity was the beating of protesters in the center of Kyiv. Then a peaceful and legal rally, which at the time consisted mainly of young people, was surrounded and then beaten by the police. The police beat people lying down. They even beat journalists. Then on December 1, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians came out in response to this brutality, the beginning of the establishment of a dictatorship and the suppression of people's rights. From that time, people did not leave the central square of Kyiv until Yanukovych fled to Russia. The first video shows the beating of protesters in the center of Kyiv. The second video is the start of the Revolution of Dignity in response to this.

A child asks, “Dad, why is this man in a wheelchair so respected?” Well, son, that man is Steve Gleason. In 2006, New Orleans was still trying to find its way home after Hurricane Katrina. Our cities were bruised. Our people were exhausted. Some had lost their homes, some had lost people they loved, and nearly everyone had lost a little piece of who they were before the storm. Then the Saints returned to the Superdome. I know that sounds silly, but the people of Louisiana needed to feel something close to normalcy. Just minutes into that game, Steve Gleason broke through the line and blocked a punt against Atlanta who is our biggest rival. The Saints recovered it for a touchdown, and the roar that filled the Dome was about so much more than football. It was a moment to breathe. For one unforgettable moment, Louisiana felt alive again. Steve gave a broken city something it desperately needed. He gave us hope. Years later, ALS began taking pieces of Steve’s body from him. It took his ability to walk. It took his natural voice. It made the simplest parts of living unbelievably difficult. But it could not take the heart of the man beneath Number 37. Steve turned his own heartbreak into help for others. Through Team Gleason, he has fought for people living with ALS, helped families receive life-changing equipment, and reminded the world that losing control of your body does not mean losing your purpose, dignity, or worth. There is something painfully beautiful about watching Louisiana surround him with love now…..and we do love him. Because when our city was struggling to stand, Steve Gleason helped lift us. Now, when his own body will no longer allow him to stand, Louisiana stands for him. That is why he is respected, loved, and supported more than you can imagine in New Orleans. That is why he is loved. And that is why Steve Gleason will forever be part of the heart of New Orleans. No White Flags.

Josep Borrell accuses Israel of the largest ethnic cleansing operation since WWII for it's actions against the Palestinians "We all know what happens there and we all hear statements from Netanyahu's ministers that are clear statements of genocidal intent" "Rarely have I heard a responsible state official express so openly a plan that meets the legal definition of genocide" "You can die by being shot in the back of the head, you can die in a gas chamber, you can also die of starvation" "And in any case, it is about the will to exterminate a people" "We are facing the biggest operation of ethnic cleansing since the end of the Second World War" "To create a splendid holiday resort once the million tons of rubble have been removed from Gaza and the Palestinians have left or have died" "One horror does not justify another horror" "I have said it many times. The horror of ever does not justify the horror of Israel's response" "Europe has the capacity and the means to not only protest, but to influence behaviour, and it does not do so" "We supply half of the bombs that fall on Gaza" "And if we really believe that there are too many dead, the natural response would be to supply fewer weapons and to use the Lever of the Association Agreement to demand that international humanitarian law be respected and not just lament that it is not being done" "We all condemned this terrorist attack by Hamas and proclaimed Israel's right to defend itself" "But the right to defence, like all rights, has its limits" "It has the limits of international law and international humanitarian law" "And in its response, Israel has violated all these rules, systematically using the starvation of the civilian population as a weapon of war and by bombing more than 50,000 dead among the population of Gaza, among them mostly women and children" "An explosive power equivalent to three times the Hiroshima bomb has been dropped on Gaza" "And for months nothing has been entering Gaza" "Nothing" "No water, no food, no electricity, no fuel, no medical services" - "And the shocks we suffer have two names" "Their names are Putin and Trump" "Two characters who, each in their own way, represent the old imperialism of the 19th century, which we know well because we have been its protagonists" "As I said before, one is much more intelligent, cunning and crafty than the other, although the other does not know it" "And that has consequences for everyone" - "What is peace?" "First and foremost, it is the peaceful coexistence between different people the coexistence between humans who for a moment think that it is better to cooperate than to fight" "And that, for example, today in the Middle East, means the ability of Palestinians and Israelis to live each in dignity and freedom, each with their own state" "Peace is the ability to face together global challenges" - "Today, on the contrary, war has returned to our borders and Trump is back in the White House" "Our time is no longer defined by peace, democracy, open trade and liberalism but by conflict, populism, protectionism and war" - "And today, for Europeans, the big issue is no longer the war between us" "And we do not sufficiently appreciate this extraordinary result" "Against our background, to have achieved 70 or 80 years of peace was an historic result which alone would justify the European Union" "The European Union has been a peace project and must remain so" "And even if we now talk a lot about rearmament, must remain a peace project conceived not for the relationship between us, but for the relationship with the rest of the world" - "Europe is the place in the world where humanity has built the best combination of political freedom, economic prosperity and social cohesion" "And today more than ever we can say that Europe is the land of the free" "When in the US people start to be afraid to speak out, Europe is more than ever the land of the free" - "It is the land of relative economic prosperity, but greater than elsewhere, which is accompanied by an effort of social cohesion so that no one is left to their own devices, so that the health of your neighbour is also a problem for you" "But not a theoretical problem, but a problem that is solved with fiscal transfers that make things that are not provided by the market, but that are human rights" "But rights are not free" "Rights are paid for, and they are paid for with taxes, paid for with collective effort" "This is what characterises Europe" "We pay more taxes than in other parts of the world" "This is the price of cohesion" "Cohesion is the price of security, and security is the way to guarantee freedom"

From Hobbits to the Real Little People of Earth’s History When watching the lives of the Hobbits in the Shire, the first thing that caught my attention was not the adventure or the Ring. It was how extraordinarily ordinary their lives were. Small homes nestled among green hills. Carefully tended gardens. Hobbits growing plants, working the land, eating, meeting their neighbors, and enjoying the very small things in life. Early in the film, Bilbo writes about them: “But where our hearts truly lie is in peace and quiet and good tilled earth. For all Hobbits share a love of things that grow.” I understand this sentence simply as saying that the place where Hobbit hearts truly belong is peace, quiet, and well-tended earth; because they love the things that grow. But the more I looked at this way of life, the more another question began to come to mind: Why are Hobbits so small? And why do they live so separately from the outside world? A World with Many Ways of Existing Middle-earth is not inhabited only by Hobbits. There are also Men, Elves, Dwarves, and many other creatures. Each group has its own way of existing. Men have kingdoms, cities, and wars. Elves carry with them an ancient history connected to nature, memory, and lands that have existed for ages. Dwarves live close to the mountains, mining, forging metal, and building cities beneath the earth. Hobbits, however, seem to choose almost the opposite path. They do not seek great kingdoms. They do not seek power. They do not seek fame. They simply want a home, a garden, and a peaceful life. This made me realize that the smallness of Hobbits is not only about their height. They also seem to choose a smaller scale of living. A life that is enough. And from there, I began to think about the real world we live in. Was there always only one kind of human on Earth? Earth Once Had Many Human Species The answer from science makes that question even more fascinating than I expected. Homo sapiens was not the only human species to have ever existed on Earth. Throughout the evolutionary history of the genus Homo, there were Neanderthals, Homo erectus, Homo naledi, Denisovans, and many other ancient human groups. Even more surprisingly, there were once humans with very small bodies. One of the most famous examples is Homo floresiensis, discovered in Liang Bua Cave on the island of Flores, Indonesia. The discovery was announced in 2004 in the journal Nature. One famous individual, designated LB1, stood at only around one meter tall. Because of its small stature, Homo floresiensis quickly became known among scientists and in the media by a very distinctive name: “Hobbit.” And this is the moment that made me stop. Because in Tolkien’s imagined world, we also have small Hobbits living on an island in their own broader sense of the word: a relatively isolated land with its own way of life and little concern for the outside world. But of course, the two are not the same. Tolkien’s Hobbits are a fictional people. Homo floresiensis was a real ancient human species. The fact that both are called “Hobbit” does not mean that Homo floresiensis was the origin of the Hobbits in The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien created the Hobbits long before Homo floresiensis was discovered by modern science. But the coincidence still makes me wonder: Why are we so easily drawn to the idea of a small human being as representing an entirely different way of existing? Small Does Not Mean Weak Perhaps this is what I find most interesting. When we see someone with a small body, it is easy to assume that they must be weaker. But evolution does not work that simply. Homo floresiensis may have adapted to the environment of Flores over a very long period of time. Its small body size may have been related to a particular evolutionary adaptation commonly referred to as “island dwarfism.” In other words, being small does not necessarily mean being unsuccessful. In a particular environment, it can be a way of existing that fits that environment. Homo floresiensis used tools and lived within its own environment. This made me look at the Hobbits differently. Perhaps what is interesting about the Hobbits is not that they are small. It is that they show us that a being does not have to be great or powerful to have a meaningful life. And Then I Return to the Shire After learning about the ancient human species that once existed on Earth, I return to the Shire. I realize that the film deliberately lets us see the Hobbits before we learn about the great wars of Middle-earth. We see them gardening. Planting trees. Eating. Walking along small paths. Living in homes built into the earth. It is a world almost completely opposite to the opening of the film. Just moments earlier, we had seen the history of the Ring, wars, kings, and struggles for power. Then the film suddenly takes us to the Shire. From war to a garden. From kingdoms to small homes. From power to an ordinary life. And perhaps this contrast is what helps me begin to understand why the story of the Ring begins with the Hobbits. The Ring represents something capable of making the entire world struggle for power. Yet the first people we see living close to it are a people who seem to have almost no interest in power at all. Another Question About History From the Hobbits, I began thinking more broadly about human history. Perhaps the most astonishing thing is not simply that there were once small-bodied humans. It is that Earth once offered many different ways for a creature with a human form to exist. Some lived in forests. Some lived on islands. Some adapted to cold climates. Some built complex communities. Some human groups had larger bodies. Others had smaller ones. And for long periods of time, some of these groups even existed at the same time. Eventually, only Homo sapiens remained as the only surviving modern human species. But that does not mean history always followed a single path. On the contrary, evolutionary history shows us that there were once many different branches. Some lasted for a long time. Some disappeared. Some left traces in our genes. And some remain only through skeletons, stone tools, and questions that do not yet have complete answers. The Hobbits Made Me See “Smallness” Differently So I do not think we should say that Tolkien’s Hobbits were the same as the little humans who once existed on Earth. We have no evidence for that. But I find something else interesting. Tolkien created a small people and placed them at the center of a story about power. Science later showed us that Earth’s history really did include small-bodied human species. The two stories are completely different. But when placed side by side, they make me ask a question: Have we become too accustomed to thinking that what is larger must also be more important? Because in Middle-earth, the strongest person is not necessarily the one with the greatest power. And in evolutionary history, a small body does not necessarily mean a poorly adapted creature. Perhaps “small” is simply another way of existing. And that is also what makes me look back at the Shire. The Hobbits do not try to become great figures. They simply want to live a peaceful life, care for their land, and enjoy the things that are growing. Yet it is from that small place that one of the greatest stories in Middle-earth begins.
