The Shin Bet, Israel’s Security Agency, was established to address immense security threats. With broad investigative, surveillance, and intelligence-gathering powers, it is vital that strong oversight mechanisms are in place to prevent misuse against individuals and communities. IDI experts Dr. Eran Shamir-Borer and Prof. Amichai Cohen (@amichaic) stress that “the importance of a Shin Bet independent from political intervention cannot be overstated.” These concerns are part of the recent petitions to the Supreme Court challenging the government’s decision to dismiss Ronen Bar, head of the Shin Bet, on the grounds that appropriate administrative procedures were not followed.
