Did you know Kerala had its own ancient Kumbh Mela that was banned 250 years go? It restarted this month. Thread: 🚩After nearly 250 years of dormancy, Kerala is witnessing the grand revival of its own Kumbh Mela, known as the Mahamagha Mahotsavam. This sacred festival, often called South India's Kumbh, kicked off on January 18, 2026, on the banks of the Bharathapuzha River in Thirunavaya, Malappuram district. It's a powerful symbol of cultural and spiritual resurgence for Kerala Hindus. 🚩 Historical Roots: The event traces back to the ancient Maha Makham or Mamankam festival, a massive religious gathering held every 12 years. It involved rituals, holy dips in the river, and philosophical discourses, drawing pilgrims from across South India. However, power struggles between local rulers like the Valluvanadu kings and the Samudri (Zamorin) of Kozhikode (Calicut) turned it violent in later years. 🚩 Colonial Shadow: British intervention played a key role in halting the Mamankam. Colonial authorities viewed such massive Hindu assemblies as potential threats to law and order, especially after the event's history of conflicts. This suppression was part of a broader pattern of disrupting indigenous traditions during the colonial era. For centuries, the tradition lay forgotten, overshadowed by Kerala's evolving socio-political landscape. 🚩 The Long Struggle for Revival: Reviving this heritage wasn't easy. Efforts began in recent years, with Hindu organisations and spiritual leaders pushing for its return. In 2016, rituals at the Thirunavaya Temple were restarted, paving the way for a full-scale event. Planned as a prelude to a grander 2028 festival, the 2026 Mahamagham faced modern challenges: A stop memo was issued on January 8 by local officials citing violations of the Kerala River Protection Act, halting preparatory works like building a temporary bridge. 🚩 Bureaucratic Battles: A controversy erupted over riverbed encroachments and use of heavy machinery. Kerala Hindus, led by groups like the Mahamagham Sabha and akhadas such as Juna Akhada, rallied against the halt. After negotiations and assurances of compliance, the event was cleared with strict conditions. The victory allowed Hindus to reclaim cultural space in a state often seen as secular (translation: anti-Hindu) and Left leaning. 🚩 How Permission Was Granted: The resolution involved high-level interventions, including from the Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar, who inaugurated the event. Organisers committed to environmental safeguards, ensuring no permanent damage to the Bharathapuzha river. This marked a significant win for Kerala Hindus, who view it as reclaiming their own land for ancient rituals after centuries of suppression - first by the British and later by the Marxist-Secular-Minority nexus. 🚩 The 2026 Event: Running until February 3, 2026, the festival features holy baths (Magha Snanam), Vedic chanting, aarti ceremonies like the Nila Aarti, and discourses on Upanishads. Led by Mahamandaleshwar Swami Anandavanam Bharathi, it includes processions, cultural programmes, and participation from sadhus across India. Over 50,000 Hindus are arriving daily at the sacred riverbanks. 🚩A Cultural Resurgence: This revival represents Sanatana Dharma's enduring spirit in Kerala. For many, it's like Lord Ram returning to Ayodhya – a homecoming of faith. It also has great economic potential (comparable to UP's Kumbh generating Rs 2.8 lakh crore). 🚩 Kerala's Soul Awakens: The Mahamagha Mahotsavam is a symbol of persistence. After 250 years and lengthy battles against inimical forces, Kerala Hindus have reclaimed their sacred gathering. May this revival inspire more such awakenings.

Like the Lebanese army, the Internal Security Forces are unable to confront Hezbollah on the issue of weapons. The “Hezbollah state” has the power to arrest (in effect, kidnap) members of the Lebanese Internal Security Forces and negotiate with the Lebanese state for their release. On January 23, 2026, a police patrol of the Lebanese Internal Security Forces, ISF (قوى الامن الداخلي ) stopped two Hezbollah trucks in the Al-Tayoune (الطيونة) area of Beirut, near a police station and military base. The trucks were parked suspiciously, had no license plates, and had tinted windows. When the police patrol approached to check the trucks, Hezbollah operatives attacked the patrol. At the end of the confrontation, Hezbollah operatives detained one of the security forces personnel and managed to prevent the patrol from uncovering the contents of the trucks. According to local reports, the trucks were carrying Hezbollah military equipment that had been smuggled from Syria through one of the illegal border crossings with Lebanon. The Hezbollah trucks continued on their way toward the “security square” in Dahiya. In light of the incident, negotiations began between the State of Lebanon and the “State of Hezbollah.” Hezbollah's representative in the negotiations was Ali Ayoub, head of Hezbollah's Security Committee, which is in effect the independent police force of the “State of Hezbollah.” Following the negotiations, Hezbollah released the security forces officer it had detained and promised to hand over the trucks to the security forces at a “later date.” In practice, this means that the trucks and their contents will not be handed over to the security forces. The Hezbollah operatives involved were not arrested or investigated. Hezbollah does as it pleases in Lebanon. This is yet another test case, this time in the context of internal security forces, which demonstrates the inability of the Lebanese security forces in general to confront Hezbollah on the issue of weapons. Attached is a report from the Lebanese "MTV" channel about the incident.

🇭🇹 Haiti’s leadership is in a high-stakes power struggle following last week’s attempted removal of the U.S.-backed, unelected prime minister. The country remains governed by a fragmented transitional arrangement that is supposed to dissolve by February 7, even as internal conflicts intensify. ⭕️ The conflict has created two opposing camps regarding who has the authority to govern Haiti: 1. Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé: Appointed as acting prime minister in November 2024, he currently holds the administrative head-of-government role. Despite a vote by the council to fire him on January 22, 2026, he says he will continue on in offie, saying on January 23, that neither "criminals wearing ties or criminals wearing flip flops" would dictate the law, and that those opposing the state would face a firm response. He retains firm backing from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the United States, which have declared his removal “null and void” and “illegal,” and have publicly issued threats of death against Haitian political figures supporting his dismissal. 2. Transitional Presidential Council (CPT): This nine-member unelected body functions as a collective head of state. It is currently chaired by Laurent Saint-Cyr, who was himself recently voted out by fellow members. On January 23, 2026, the CPT announced it had voted to remove Fils-Aimé and planned to appoint a successor within 30 days. The decision has not yet been published in Haiti’s official gazette, a required step for it to take legal effect. ⭕️ The Looming February 7 Deadline A major constitutional and political crisis is expected on February 7, 2026, when the CPT’s legal mandate is set to expire. ➤ U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has explicitly called for the CPT to be dissolved by this date to prevent "corrupt actors" from interfering with the path to elections. In the CPT’s absence, the U.S.-backed (and chosen) prime minister would continue governing as head until a president is elected. ➤ Electoral timeline: Although the government designated 2026 as an "electoral year," the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) has stated that holding elections before the February 7 deadline is "materially impossible" due to ongoing gang violence. Estimated dates for the two rounds of presidential elections fall in August and December this year, which would mark Haiti’s first presidential vote since President Jovenel Moïse was killed at his home in July 2021. ➤ In the absence of a unified central government, local "governance" in many areas, particularly 90% of Capital Port-au-Prince, is effectively managed by gang coalitions like the "Viv Ansanm" alliance. 🎥 VIDEO: Carlos Ruiz Massieu, head of the UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), urged Haitian political actors on Friday to prioritize national stability and halt infighting, as the transitional governance arrangement ends on February 7. CPT Council Member Leslie Voltaire said earlier: “Everyone is looking for a Haitian solution to the crisis, but when we start to find a Haitian solution to the crisis, the international community comes in with all its claws.” He added that although the council is on its way out, he wants it in the “second half” to work with a strong team. If political parties and civil society fail to identify “the best of the best” by Feb. 6, he said, “we will come up with a solution.”

Full episode now on X: My conversation with Gavin Baker, founder and CIO of Atreides Management and one of the sharpest technology investors of the last 25 years, is out now. I sat down with Gavin to talk about how a kid from Texas who planned to live out of the back of a pickup truck, climb full-time, and write the next great American novel instead became one of the most respected deep-tech investors of his generation, and why he believes everything important he learned came from getting humbled early. Gavin spent 18 years at Fidelity, rising to manage the $17 billion OTC fund. He met Jensen Huang at 23 when NVIDIA was a tiny stock, showed up to a near-empty 6 PM meeting with Elon Musk when Tesla was a $1.5B company, and has read essentially every NVIDIA and Tesla transcript since. In 2019 he left to found Atreides, where he invests across public and private markets with the same first-principles lens — watts, wafers, and the physics of compute. What makes Gavin different is that he treats investing as a game of self-knowledge as much as analysis. We spent most of the conversation not on stock picks, but on temperament, failure, and what actually separates great investors from everyone else. We spoke about: - A free-range Texas childhood with an unlimited book budget and asking his parents if dinner was a "one-book, two-book, or three-book dinner" - Writing a bearish semiconductor note at 23, weeks before the dot-com crash, off a simple inventory analysis - Blowing up on large-cap pharma at 25 — going from department star to the very bottom - "You either panic early or double down late, and almost no one does both" — and why knowing which one you are is everything - Why being early is the same thing as being wrong - Reading two books during every drawdown, and finding a number you can improve when everything else is going wrong … and much more. This was filmed in February 2026
