Yet some media outlets reframed Bar’s revelations, suggesting his failure lay in refusing unlawful orders, as if the Prime Minister’s will supersedes legal authority. IDI expert Anat Thon-Ashkenazy maintains that this position not only threatens democracy’s most basic tenets, but it raises a deeper question: is the government - or its leader - subject to the law? The 2023 Israeli Democracy Index found that while 35% of the public believe any Knesset-approved decision is inherently democratic, 50% reject majority rule decisions that contradict core democratic values. @AnatThon stresses that it is critically important that we ensure the Israeli public, its leaders, and its institutions understand and uphold these principles.
