October 20 to November 21, 1962, will forever be etched as a dark and humiliating chapter in the history of Independent India. That was the time when thousands of Indians and numerous members of our armed forces paid with their lives for the delusional 'Hindi-Chini bhai bhai' policy followed by the then political leadership of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru and his Leftist Defence Minister, Krishna Menon. India bore the cost of this weak and delusional leadership, and our proud country endured global humiliation. It caused unforgivable damage to the morale of our armed forces, who, despite being ill-equipped, fought valiantly until the last bullet and even with bayonets and bare hands, causing heavy casualties to the enemies. Many heroes fought to protect India and sacrificed their lives. It is a pleasure to be with you this evening to celebrate the memory and contribution of our first Prime Minister, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. He was the prime architect of the modern Indian nation-state. His was a life anchored firmly in parliamentary democracy. He had a steadfast belief in planned economic growth and a profound commitment to the development of scientific temper alongside the development of scientific and technological capabilities. To him, secularism — in which he firmly believed — meant the celebration of India’s many diversities while strengthening its fundamental unity. His legacy continues to shape our everyday lives. Decades have gone by since his time, but he continues to serve as a beacon of light to millions of our countrymen and women. It is inevitable that such a monumental figure will have his life and work analysed and critiqued — and that is indeed as it should be. Although the temptation to divorce him from his times and the challenges that he had to face and to look at him, devoid of the historical context in which he functioned has become quite widespread. Yet, while we welcome ongoing analysis of his contributions, what is not acceptable is the systematic attempt being made to denigrate, distort, demean and defame him. The sole objective of this is to not only diminish him as a personality but also his universally recognised role in India's independence struggle and his early decades as a leader of an independent nation challenged by unprecedented problems, but it is also to demolish his multifaceted legacy in a crude and self-serving attempt to rewrite history. Analysis is one thing, but deliberate mischief with what he said, what he wrote and what he did is another thing and totally unacceptable. And who are the forces that have launched this project? We all know that they have worked for years and years—for decades—and finally, here they are. They belong to an ideology that had no role whatsoever in our freedom movement, that had no role whatsoever in the making of our Constitution. In fact, they even burnt it and were totally against it. It is an ideology that long ago fanned an atmosphere of hate that ultimately led to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi ji. His killers today continue to be glorified by its adherents. It is an ideology that has consistently rejected the ideals of our founding fathers. It is an ideology with a bigoted and viciously communal outlook. Its approach to nationhood is based on stoking prejudices of all kinds. Let there be no doubt whatsoever that the project to vilify Jawaharlal Nehru ji is the main objective of the ruling establishment today. Their goal is not just to erase him; it is actually to destroy the social, political, and economic foundations on which our nation has been founded and built. The road ahead is not easy. But there is simply no option but for each one of us, individually and collectively, to stand up and confront this project. We not only owe it to the memory of Jawaharlal Nehru ji and his comrades—we owe it to ourselves, and even more to the coming generations. The unapologetic and fierce defence of the Nehruvian legacy is not an act of nostalgia. It is a commitment to restoring India's constitutional promise, to safeguarding reason in the face of propaganda, and to ensuring that our republic remains modern and forward-looking. If we succeed, it will not only honour Jawaharlal Nehru ji's memory; it will ensure that the India he envisioned remains a reality. At a time when tolerance in public life is shrinking, when dissent is painted as disloyalty, and history is reduced to partisan combat, Nehru ji's example becomes even more vital. He taught us that disagreement is not a threat but a democratic necessity—that unity does not demand uniformity; that a confident nation need not fear the truth about its past. Friends, there is some reason for hope. Last month, the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund also launched an archive which can be accessed at The archive is an easily searchable and freely downloadable digital archive—also, by the way, accessible on your smartphone. At present, it covers the hundred published volumes of his selected works, covering the period from 1903 till the day before he died. The archive will continue to expand. So, there it will be for you all to access any time you want to know something about what he said, what he wrote, or what he did. Sandeep Dixit's initiative, which has brought all of us here this evening, is another sincere attempt to take on this challenge of rescuing Nehru ji from the web of deception. And we need many, many more such initiatives across the length and breadth of our country. 🚨Every civilised society despises those elements that try to disrupt its cohesion and safety fabric. #Balochistan #Pakistan #ISPR Therefore, these negative elements face a societal backlash &, ultimately, alienation from the public. Recent attack by BLF on brave soldiers of #PakistanArmy in Pasni is an excellent example in this regard, where the former used monstrous means to inflict harm on the defenders of the soil only to further their separatist ideals. However, their malicious actions backfired as the young students and residents of Makran rejected the actions of the BLF and other Baloch terrorist organizations. The manifestation of this rejection can be seen in this video, where the youngsters of Gwadar pay heartfelt homage to the 14 martyrs who lost their lives in a BLF-backed terrorist attack earlier this month. While the mouthpieces of Baloch terrorist groups and ultranationalistic terrorist sympathisers tried their best to divert people’s minds and garner their favour, the people, on the other hand, rejected their false narratives and decided to side with the true defenders of the Baloch nation, the Pakistan Army. This shows that the actions of terrorist organisations like BLF may appear like a victory to them, but these wicked actions are drifting the youth of Balochistan away from their vile ideology. Women who will lift and build others, who will love and be loved, women who live bravely, both tender and fierce, women of indomitable will.” – Amy Tenney And indeed, it is the strong women of Pakistan who are defining the critical phase in the nation’s history. I applaud the womenfolk from different segments of our society who are standing firm to resist fascism. Their sacrifices and efforts will always be remembered. 14th of March marked a day of resistance against fascism which is the hallmark of the current regime. Police and Rangers were deployed in huge numbers around Chairman Imran Khan’s residence to unlawfully arrest the former Prime Minister, where thousands of his supporters had gathered to deny the regime from executing the illegitimate action. We resisted tooth and nail against relentless shelling and baton charge denying the arrest of our Chairman. For hours on end, I suffered a barrage of shelling but stayed steadfast to lead the unarmed protestors. Moreover, the day of 25th of May last year will go down in Pakistan’s history as a day that, amongst other features, signified the rise of Pakistani women to stand up for their rights in the face of extreme state barbarism. Countless ladies from all walks of life showed their will and resilience that day as they came to the streets in protest against the imported Government, braving teargas shells and police baton charge. Amongst the political leadership, most remarkable of all was the sheer strength of character and courage shown by Dr. Yasmin Rashid, a 71-year-old cancer survivor who was harassed by the police initially the night before the march and then on the roads, as police goons damaged her car, smashing the windscreen and pulled her off the vehicle. The remarkably resilient lady, however, was not intimidated and continued her journey to Islamabad. I myself braved through some of the most gruesome behaviour of police as innocent protestors in my convoy from Southern Punjab were continually subjected to the worst form of shelling by the police. Multiple vehicles were smashed up by thugs in bandannas facilitating the police, as it was clear the Government was hellbent on trampling over the right of peaceful protest we as the citizens of Pakistan are supposed to have. My convoy, regardless, moved on with intent, removing obstacles and making way for the other marchers as we were amongst the first ones to reach D-Chowk. I also continually updated the progress of the march from my social media accounts. Additionally, the bravery shown by Shireen Mazari – the way she has risen to challenge and has exposed sheer hypocrisy and double standards is also commendable. She has most effectively taken up the burning issue of the diplomatic cipher at the heart of the regime change episode, and called out different parties to clarify their positions regarding how they are fulfilling their duties to the country. Amongst countless womenfolk in PTI, some notable leaders to specifically mention here include Barrister Maleeka Bokhari who stood firm and continued to move on despite the heavy shelling, and has also wonderfully been working on the cases for the restoration of the rights of protestors. Others including Kanwal Shauzab MNA, Aliya Hamza Malik and Musarrat Cheema are role models for women across the country in this struggle for freedom. This struggle for defying the imposed imported Government and for genuine freedom of Pakistan is a national movement rather than a political one. And the nation’s females are an integral part of the resistance. The nation won’t be cowed down by state brutalities as we know the power of truth trumps everything. Others including Kanwal Shauzab MNA, Aliya Hamza Malik and Musarrat Cheema are role models for women across the country in this struggle for freedom. This struggle for defying the imposed imported Government and for genuine freedom of Pakistan is a national movement rather than a political one. Laid the foundation stone of the ‘Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Special Center for Security and Strategic Studies’ and inaugurated the ‘Kusumagraj Special Center for Marathi Language, Literature and Culture’ at JNU, today. The commemorative stone plaques of both centers were also unveiled. There was a deep sense of fulfilment in seeing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy of vision and strategic brilliance receive a space for academic study in the heart of the nation’s capital. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's forts were never mere stone structures. They were expressions of foresight, courage, and unmatched planning. Their recent recognition by UNESCO as the 'Maratha Military Landscape of India; stands as a global tribute to that legacy. Built across the Sahyadris, the coasts, and the plateaus, these forts still stand strong centuries later, each telling a story of civilisational strength and tactical mastery. In a time when many bowed before foreign powers, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, blessed by Rajmata Jijau, took the oath of Swarajya. The battles Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj led were never for personal rule, but for self-rule of the people. This recognition as a Classical Language came after strong scholarly backing and a heartfelt appeal, which was graciously accepted by Hon PM Narendra Modi Ji, a gesture that reflects his deep respect for India’s linguistic heritage. Language carries memory, emotion, and knowledge. It must be spoken with respect and preserved with openness. Whether it is Marathi, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi or Sanskrit, every Bharatiya language is a pillar of India’s cultural strength. To honour one’s mother tongue is to honour the roots of the nation.
