When asked about the film, Kitano first mentioned the incredible sea battle scene, where the entire Colosseum is filled with water for a mock naval battle complete with ships, fire, and even sharks. “They really went for it. That alone made it interesting. I wish they’d made it last longer,” he said, visibly impressed by the epic scale and realism. He noted that this kind of mock naval battle was said to have been held in ancient Rome and added, “You often read about it, but seeing it actually come to life on screen was something else. This kind of large-scale movie is one you absolutely have to see in theaters. TV just can’t convey that scale. Watching the naval battles and the gladiator fights on a big screen is essential for the full experience,” he remarked excitedly. Known for his own work with intense, direct portrayals of violence, Kitano praised the film’s gladiatorial combat: “It shows only what’s necessary in the fight scenes; it’s not needlessly violent. I think it’s well done. It doesn’t go overboard, but it doesn’t shy away from violence either. Violence is shown as violence, as it should be.” Kitano admired how Ridley Scott balanced the intensity to suit a large, global audience, describing the director’s touch as “just right.” — from official Japanese website
