Those who can so subtly execute the four main tones as well as the fifth neutral tone within the structure of the tone rules, and do that while singing without disrupting the formation of the pitches that make up the melody are among the most gifted Chinese language singers, they are very rare. Most singers in Chinese ignore the tone rules completely. Some Chinese singers, theatrical singers, they grotesquely exaggerate the tone rules, and for a native speaking audience, it can be absolutely hilarious for them. I often wondered why the heck the Chinese audience was laughing and carrying on so during one of the warbly, wild tone presentations in traditional Chinese opera/theater singing. It's like when you or I might sing "Sheeee - eeee - eeee- it ! ! !" In a country and western drawl. I like where you're going, Mandarin, reading, writing the characters and finding the flow is a real passion that I enjoy.
