Air conditioning has been part of American culture for nearly 200 years. Dr. John Gorrie, a medical doctor, invented air conditioning in 1837 in Florida. He sealed up a room and piped in hot air over ice buckets cooling the room down. He wanted to keep patients cool and comfortable as they suffered from malaria. They thought the air caused it, hence the Italian for bad air = "mala aria." Gorrie then patented a machine in 1845 that could bring air conditioning to any room, anywhere. It had a side effect: it also made ice. Here's a 5 min documentary on how Gorrie invented it, why, narrated and written by the great British historian James Burke from his TV show Connections — the greatest TV show ever made in my opinion.

Let me take a break from partisan political conversations and actually speak about this issue that affects us all: the quality of air we breathe. We might find some agreement here. 🤭 -Do you know the safe air limit? -Do you know the air quality in your neighborhood? Is it within this safe air limit? -Do you know what to do to improve the air quality in your neighborhoods? Public Square has partnered with a bunch of citizens, runners, walkers, outdoor enthusiasts to just walk/run around their neighborhoods and talk about #KampalaAirQuality. This is a campaign we shall run under the hashtag #KampalaBreathes We really just wanna hear stories of ordinary citizens going about their daily lives and how they think they can improve the air they breathe. Yesterday, we had the honor of walking with the country’s most celebrated road safety champion Joseph Beyanga Joe Walker for 21 kilometers. The walk was in the Ntinda, Kyambogo, Naalya areas. Public Square will share findings of the same all in the name of #CitizenScienceUG Thank you Joseph Beyanga Joe Walker for being ever so willing to participate in initiatives aimed at improving the way we live and celebrate life!

ATC Audio: A JetBlue aircraft narrowly avoided a midair collision with a U.S. Air Force refueling tanker operating without its transponder on, off the coast of Venezuela, shortly after the JetBlue A320 took off from Curaçao bound for JFK Airport. JetBlue Pilot: “We just had traffic pass directly in front of us within 5 miles of us — maybe 2 or 3 miles — but it was an air-to-air refueler from the United States Air Force and he was at our altitude. Most of our major cities are living under a blanket of poisonous air. Millions of children are getting lung diseases, their future is being destroyed, and people are getting cancer. Older people are struggling to breathe. This is an interesting issue because I am certain that there would be full agreement between the government and us on this. This is not an ideological issue; everybody in the House agrees that air pollution—and the damage it is doing to our people—is something we should co-operate on. I think it is important that the government develops a plan to get rid of air pollution in our cities. We are more than happy to co-operate with the government to develop such a plan. On this issue, we can show the country that we can work together on something that is critical. We should have a detailed discussion in Parliament on this, and the Prime Minister should put in place a methodical, systematic plan for each city—one that can, over the next 5 or 10 years, make life easier for our people. : LoP Shri Rahul Gandhi in Lok Sabha
