I found myself watching this particular game earlier tonight, and it struck me how extraordinary it was. It featured one of the most unique video referee decisions ever made in Super League history, a decision so rare that it has not been seen before or since. Eagle-eyed referee Ian Smith suspects that Brent Webb may be offside in a position which is nicknamed “downtown” by the match officials. Video referee Thierry Alibert confidently made the crucial and correct decision that would shape the outcome of the match in Bradford’s favour. Interestingly, Thierry is coming back to work with Phil Bentham and the RFL match officials department for the new 2025 season.

I respectfully disagree with some of my local colleagues who are downplaying Coach Javier Mascherano’s concerns about a Mexican referee overseeing Inter Miami’s match against Necaxa. As Mascherano put it: “It’s wrong… What do you think? Do you really think that’s OK? In no competition where two teams from different countries face each other should a referee from one of those countries be in charge.” He’s not wrong. For example, in UEFA, referee nationality is taken into consideration and UEFA prioritizes appointing referees from countries not involved in the match to ensure impartiality. Yesterday’s officiating by Daniel Quintero Huitron - including a controversial red card for Miami defender Maxi Falcon in the 17th minute - was suspect, to say the least. I understand that Mexican and American referees make up the majority of the officiating pool, and with only two leagues involved, assigning officials can be challenging.
