This is the first time the Central Bank of Kenya, the Governor no less, has spoken openly about the contentious & much debated Sec44 of the Banking Act. · Dr. Kamau Thugge says that as far as the Central Bank is concerned, there is no need for banks seeking approval from the CS National Treasury for interest rate adjustments · The stance taken by the Governor, & the Central Bank by extension, goes against the Supreme Court judgement on the matter Stanbic Bank Kenya Limited vs Santowels Limited which affirmed Sec44 of the Banking Act which dictates that no institution can increase its rate of banking or other charges without the National Treasury CS's approval · It is also important to note that the Governor emphasises that monetary policy adjustment should be transmitted IMMEDIATELY by banks. Four months ago, the question of immediate transmission was the cause of a storm between banks & their regulator (see quoted tweet)

This was last night on Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show. He compared Donald Trump’s attempt to control America’s central bank, the Fed, to how Zimbabwe’s central bank has long been controlled by politicians, explicitly likening Trump’s actions to Robert Mugabe’s capture and control of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. While Zimbabwe was used on this show a few hours ago to demonstrate the madness of Donald Trump, it is important for us as Zimbabweans to realise how far we have sunk. Our central bank, our presidents, and our political elites are now known for having stripped the central bank of its independence and for making purely political and not monetary decisions. When this becomes material for comedy, you can imagine how it is discussed in boardrooms and other serious spaces where economic decisions are made in America and across the world. We really have to change. I do not know what it will take for Zimbabweans, especially those with the power and influence to bring change, to realise that the country’s image has been severely damaged internationally by the actions of corrupt politicians. We need to do better.

An Al Jazeera reporter showed up in London’s famous Jewish neighborhood Golders Green after antisemitic vandals set 4 ambulances used by Jewish volunteers on fire. The residents told her that Al Jazeera employees stormed Israel on October 7th 2023. She denied it. Looks like she conveniently forgot about the Al Jazeera correspondent Ismail Abu Omar who stormed Kibbutz Nir Oz with Hamas terrorists on October 7. He is a Hamas platoon commander in the East Khan Younis Battalion. She also forgot about the Al Jazeera reporter Ismail al-Ghoul who turned out to also be a member of Hamas’s elite Nukhba Force. He participated in the invasion of southern Israel on October 7th and was killed in an Israeli strike in July 2024. The Islamists from the Qatari state television channel have been embedded in Hamas for years.

In 2019, I asked a question about Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem's abduction and secret detention by Bangladesh state agents to Gowher Rizvi, international affairs adviser to the PM of Bangladesh on Mehdi Hasan Al Jazeera English His answer is even more ridiculous following the release of Arman and many others from the regimes' unlawful detention yesterday. I did take up Mr Rizvi's offer to contact him about the case. After a few responses with pleasantries, he then decided not to respond to my regular emails.
