Wednesday’s visit... is aimed at meeting with community leaders to address the prolonged communal violence that has claimed over 500 lives in 2025 alone. Upon his arrival, the President will first proceed to Yelewata in Guma Local Government Area, the epicentre of the latest attack that claimed over 100 lives. Tinubu is scheduled to meet with families of victims, displaced persons and community leaders directly impacted by the violence. From Yelewata, the President will visit the hospital where several persons injured from the attack are recuperating. He will proceed to the Benue State Government House Banquet Hall in Makurdi, where he will preside over a town hall meeting with critical stakeholders. Expected at the meeting are key national and state-level figures, including governors, particularly from the North Central zone, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Dr Umar Ganduje and other personalities from across political, security and traditional institutions. Other attendees include the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, a former Benue State Governor (1999-2007), Governor Samuel Ortom (2015-2023), members of the APC National Working Committee, and federal lawmakers representing the affected communities in Benue. Traditional rulers from various ethnic groups within Benue are also seated for the meeting alongside the Executive Chairmen of the 23 Local Government Areas of the state. Also present are the Elders’ Council, members of the Benue State House of Assembly, party executives at the local government level, the Benue State Executive Council and other critical stakeholders from the religious and civil society. Speaking just before delivering the Sunday Angelus prayer, the Pope prayed for “security, justice, and peace” in Nigeria, adding that he was thinking in particular of the “rural Christian communities of the Benue State who have been relentless victims of violence”. Responding to the attack, Amnesty International Nigeria on Saturday called on Nigerian authorities to “immediately end the almost daily bloodshed in Benue State and bring the actual perpetrators to justice”.

President Tinubu told the Council that Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria from Kogi State in the North-Central region, is the first person from that zone to be nominated to head the electoral body and described him as apolitical. Council members endorsed the nomination, with Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo calling him a man of integrity. In line with the Constitution, the President will now forward Amupitan’s name to the Senate for screening and confirmation. The 58-year-old law professor is currently Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Jos, where he has taught since 1989. He specialises in Company Law, Evidence, and Corporate Governance, and became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 2014.

The athletes were returning from the National Sports Festival held in Ogun State. Tinubu brokers Rivers peace talks President Bola Tinubu hosted a reconciliation meeting on Thursday night at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, bringing together all the figures in the Rivers State political crisis. Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, Speaker Martins Amaewhule, and other Rivers State Assembly members attended the closed-door session. On March 18, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, and all the State House of Assembly members.
