HEAVY RAINS IN HYDERABAD: JT. CP TRAFFIC SRI JOEL DAVIS, IPS CONDUCTS FIELD INSPECTION AT WATERLOGGING POINTS HYDERABAD: In view of the heavy rainfall across Hyderabad today, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Hyderabad City, Sri Joel Davis, IPS, appealed to all city residents to remain alert and cautious. To ensure smooth traffic flow and safety, the Joint CP personally conducted field inspections at major waterlogging points, including Lakdikapul, Ayodhya Junction, and PTI Masab Tank. During the inspection, Sri Joel Davis, IPS, reviewed the water drainage arrangements and traffic regulation measures on the ground. As rainwater accumulation has slowed down vehicle movement in several parts of the city, traffic personnel are actively deployed on the roads to manage traffic flow. Coordination Meeting Between Police and GHMC on Monsoon Preparedness Advance measures to prevent inconvenience to city residents Keeping the upcoming monsoon season in view, the Police and GHMC departments have decided to work in coordination to take preventive measures so that citizens do not face any inconvenience. A convergence coordination meeting was held on Thursday at the Old Police Commissionerate Office in Basheerbagh under the leadership of Hyderabad Police Commissioner Sri V. C. Sajjanar, IPS, and GHMC Commissioner Sri R. V. Karnan, IAS. During the meeting, officials discussed several key issues and gave clear directions to field-level staff. They instructed that desilting of drainage systems and repair of pipelines should begin immediately on a war footing, rather than waiting for the rains to start. Officials also emphasized that work should begin immediately at the top 10 identified waterlogging points in the city to provide permanent solutions. They further directed that all open manholes must be securely covered to prevent any threat to public safety. It was noted that a proper plan should be prepared and implemented to remove encroachments on footpaths for the convenience of pedestrians. Authorities were also instructed to ensure that streetlights function properly at night for public safety and to install new lights wherever necessary. To prevent road accidents, engineering defects on roads should be rectified. Continuous measures should also be taken to avoid traffic congestion near ongoing flyover and underpass construction sites. GHMC Commissioner Sri R. V. Karnan stated: Ensuring that there is no loss of life or property during the monsoon is the primary responsibility of officials. GHMC will work closely with the police department to further improve urban infrastructure, with special focus on road maintenance and city beautification. In this regard, he has also informed that dedicated budget of Rs. 25 Crores per each Zone (Total - Rs. 150 Crores) shall be allocated exclusively for traffic improvement-related works. Initially, representatives from the ORR maintenance agency, IRB, gave a PowerPoint presentation detailing the measures currently being implemented for road safety. Speaking on the occasion, Hyderabad CP Sri V.C. Sajjanar, IPS, emphasised that rather than reacting after an accident occurs, many lives can be saved through proactive preventive measures. He instructed that utmost priority must be given to road safety on this route, which witnesses an average daily traffic of 2.80 lakh vehicles. Noting that an average of five to six accidents are currently occurring every day, he urged the officials to work in coordination and take steps to bring this number down to zero. He suggested that violators of traffic rules should not only be issued challans but also be provided with special counseling. Furthermore, he recommended that safety messages should be sent to the mobile phones of commuters as they enter the ORR. The CP directed officials to take measures to reduce response times during emergencies and recommended utilizing the services of traffic marshals if necessary. He made it clear that vehicles must not be stopped on the ORR under any circumstances, except in the event of a breakdown. If stopping is unavoidable, commuters must immediately inform the helpline, ensure adequate safety precautions, and park the vehicle exclusively in the extreme left lane. Analysing the statistics from the past four months, he pointed out that 33% of accidents occurred due to drowsiness/sleep deprivation, 25% due to reckless driving, 15% due to overspeeding, and 14% due to tire bursts. He explained that these accidents could be prevented by creating extensive awareness among motorists. He also advocated for data driven safety enhancement measures and implementing a safety ranking protocol for expressways. Subsequently, Transport Department Commissioner Shri Ilambarthi, IAS, stated that their department is taking all necessary measures to curb accidents. These include increase in CCTV penetration, implementation of recent Supreme Court guidelines and various other measures.
