Trump meets families of Japanese abducted by North Korea: โ€œIโ€™m with them all the wayโ€ After talks with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Donald Trump met with families of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea in the 1970s and 1980s. Relatives held photos of their loved ones โ€” people the North Korean regime never returned. โ€œIโ€™m with them all the way. America is with them,โ€ Trump said, addressing the group. In the 1970s and 1980s, North Korean intelligence kidnapped Japanese citizens directly from beaches and streets across Japan, forcing them into boats and secretly taking them to North Korea. ๐Ÿค” Why? Pyongyang needed native speakers and cultural trainers to teach its spies how to โ€œact Japanese.โ€ Victims were forced to teach language, forge documents, and assist in covert operations under false identities. Some women were coerced into marrying North Korean agents or used to bear โ€œidealโ€ offspring for espionage training. According to Japanโ€™s official data, at least 17 people were abducted, but independent investigations suggest hundreds may have disappeared. The youngest known victim, Megumi Yokota, was just 13 years old โ€” her family never saw her again. North Korea admitted to some of the abductions only in 2002, when Kim Jong Il sought to ease tensions with Japan. Of the five people who were allowed to return, most spoke of torture and isolation. To this day, dozens of Japanese families still wait for news โ€” and North Korea has yet to be held accountable for these crimes.
