Mike Nichols on how the young audiences reacted to 'The Graduate' (1967) when it was first screened: "Interviewer: "'The Graduate' (1967) was a phenomenon when it opened…how did it feel to suddenly be considered a hero of the 1960s youth movement when you were in your mid thirties? Nichols: Very weird, actually. But it wasn’t quite like that at first. Joseph E. Levine made us take the film around to college campuses. After we’d showed it to a bunch of younger audiences there, the question on everyone’s lips was, “How come it’s not about Vietnam?” The only way college students could apparently get laid in those days was to be very serious and concerned about the war, so 80 to 90 percent of the kids said, “We can’t tell whether you are for or against Vietnam in this movie.… What are we supposed to think?” That was their criterion. They had no idea what they were looking at. It wasn’t until we got the movie in front of audiences that we felt like younger viewers would feel a kinship with it. We previewed 'The Graduate' in a theater on 86th Street; we just showed up and essentially flung the movie on top of another feature to surprise people. And in the last five minutes—starting with the melee in the church—everyone stood and cheered. I mean, it was like being at a prizefight. And it wasn’t even a finished print; I still had the sound in a box on my lap, because we hadn’t fully mixed the movie yet. Naval explains how people end up in places they never meant to be: "If you're not careful, you can end up in a place in life not only that you don't want to be, but one you didn't even mean to get to. Usually people end up there because they're going on autopilot with societal expectations. Or out of guilt. Or out of mimetic desire, our desires are picked up from other people. Go to law school, go to med school, go to business school. Or it might be what your parents expect. Guilt is just society's voice speaking in your head so you'll be a good little monkey." He shares a problem most people have: "We run on these four-year cycles. You join a startup, you vest over four years. College is four years. High school is four years. You go to law school, that's a 5-year cycle. You become a lawyer, that's a 40-year cycle. These are very long cycles. But the amount of time we spend deciding what to do and who to do it with? Very short. We spend one month deciding on a job where we're going to be for 10 years." Naval's rule: "If you're making a four-year decision, spend a year thinking it through. Really thinking it through. 25% of the time." He explains the Secretary Theorem: "It turns out the optimal time to search is about a third. By a third of the way through, you've seen enough to know what the bar is. Then anybody who meets or exceeds that bar is good enough. But here's the key: it's not time-based. It's iteration-based. You need to take opportunities quickly and bail out quickly. If you look at failed relationships, the biggest regret is usually staying after you knew it was over." Naval reframes the 10,000 hour rule: "Malcolm Gladwell popularized 10,000 hours to mastery. I'd say it's actually 10,000 iterations to mastery. Iteration is not repetition. Repetition is doing the same thing over and over. Iteration is modifying it with learning and doing another version. That's error correction. If you get 10,000 error corrections in anything, you will be an expert." On pessimism vs. optimism: "You want to be skeptical about specific things, every specific opportunity is probably a fail. But you want to be optimistic in the general. Something in here is going to work out. If something fails, it was a learning experience. It was an iteration. As long as you learned something, it's a win. You don't want to jump into the first thing. But once you find the match, you have to be willing to go all in. Move your chips to the center of the table." He concludes: "Most people are stuck in this gray bit. 'I'm half in, but I don't really know.' That doesn't work. It's a barbell strategy, black or white. The person in charge, I don't know who he was, colonel or whatnot. Asked me to show him to a secure room within the BNB, which I did. On doing so. They loaded in roughly between 60-70 really big crates. I asked what was in the crates, and I was told that I was not permitted to know. He then handed me a smaller parcel and told me that I will receive a phone call to give me further instructions on what to to. And when to open this parcel, which was very strange. So I've had this personal for about a week in my office. And I started talking into a friend of mine, and he said, well, you know what? You don't know what's inside these parcels. It could be anything. It's your to see whatever's inside your property, you ain't the right state open, and I should have a look what it was. The book "Excellent Advice for Living" is so good I read it in one sitting. The book is a collection of maxims Kevin Kelly wrote to his adult children. Each maxim contains a bit of wisdom he wish he'd known earlier. 79 maxims that resonated the most (I added #57 selfishly) 1. Choose to believe that the entire universe is conspiring behind your back to make you a success. 2. Mastering the view through the eyes of others will unlock many doors. 3. If you can avoid seeking the approval of others your power is limitless. 4. The reward for good work is more work. 5. Don’t be the best. Be the only. 6. The urgent is a tyrant. The important should be your king. 7. Find smart people who will disagree with you. 8. The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing. 9. The most counterintuitive truth of the universe is that the more you give to others the more you'll get. 10. Life gets better as you replace transactions with relationships. 11. Disappointed to say that in my 10th year of commentating competitive Tekken 7, I will not be involved in its conclusion at the TWT Finals. Telling the story of these players and building this community has taken up the majority of my life this past decade so I put together a video to reflect back on it (👇bottom of this post). I've been telling this story since Evo 2015 with Nobi and AO in the grand finals of Evo. We saw the Echo Fox boys dominate the scene, then the Knee/JDCR era, to Qudans returning to win the first TWT (Hei-ha-chi! Hei-ha-chi!). In 2018 we had the Knee/Qudans era which concluded with Rangchu winning the TWT Finals. Then in 2019 Arslan Ash flipped the planet upside down at Evo Japan, Ryan Hart owned me up, Pakistan showed up through the rest of that year, and we saw Chikurin become TWT Champ. Then came Leroy Japan 2020 (shoutouts to Book) before the pandemic online era, online Evo's, Tekken Online Challenges and the creation of ICFC. More recently Arslan closed out his 4 Evo Titles, we witnessed the Knee/Arslan era, and now its the Atif Butt era, with him winning TWT Finals and closing out Gamers8 this year. So many players, new and old, will converge on New Orleans this weekend to conclude this story of what I believe has been THE BEST ARC IN FGC HISTORY. Personally, this past decade has been an incredible journey that I will forever be grateful for. I got to travel the world (Amsterdam, Japan, France, Australia, Philippines, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Pakistan, Canada, Chile, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Germany) with my friends and make new friends across the globe. I helped start UYU and was their VP as we gave opportunities to players like Jeondding, LowHigh, Yuyu, Qudans etc. Jinhee and Drew showed so much love to the FGC during that time and I'm grateful they gave me the opportunity to guide the team internally. This past weekend the ICFC Championship was my last commentary for Tekken 7, marking a bittersweet end for my Tekken 7 commentary journey. The beginnings of ICFC were notable though. By 2018, Wednesday Night Fights Tekken 7 was dying. We were down to 4 entrants and there was no stream. I asked Valle if I could take over the Tekken 7 portion, I put together all the equipment, setup the stream going forward and we grew to 64 man weeklies offline. It COULD NOT have been done without Tanman, #BeeLDeaL | B:L, Billy, Suiken, Michael Y. Kwon and 上原 rickstah, who all held it down once the ball got rolling. Then the pandemic hit, we pivoted to online tournaments and ran everything ourselves. We had expanded our local to the entire west coast and after T7's netcode update, the entire USA. 10/0 reached out with the idea of taking what we had built and expanding it to EU and Asia. It was a difficult decision to step away from WNF, but I moved our tournaments to 10/0, ICFC began, and we now have a new generation of top players built ONLINE. That was unprecedented for Tekken. A HUGE thank you to all of the community for participating in these events and donating to the prize pools. Without the players and the community, none of this would exist. Never forget that. Big thanks to Chris Ceg and 10/0 for expanding what we started and pushing it to new heights. I have to also thank Katsuhiro Harada and Michael Murray for the amazing game that is TEKKEN 7.
