Attended Palm Sunday Namirembe Cathedral today. However the presentation from Sanyu Babies Home revealed something deeply concerning, there are significantly more boys than girls in care homes. It’s troubling to see that many people are still hesitant to adopt boys. This fear or bias leaves more boys growing up in care homes without the families they deserve. As a community, we must challenge these perceptions and remember, every child, boy or girl, needs love, guidance, and a place to call home. Let’s open our hearts and give every child an equal chance. 💙

After I shared the video, his wife reached out to me and requested that I visit him to understand the true situation. This evening, I met him and his family, and I learned that he is not homeless. He is a married man, a father of five children, and has been living with his family in Texas, USA. According to his family, he has bipolar disorder, and his condition became worse after the passing of his mother. He is currently under medical care and takes prescribed medication. The family explained that during some episodes of his illness, he may leave home and wander the streets. This has led many people to believe that he is homeless, which is not true. They also shared that he has a passion for recycling and environmental conservation, which is why he is sometimes seen collecting recyclable materials or around dumpsites. I would like to clarify to the general public that this man is not homeless. He has a loving family that cares deeply for him. When you see him on the streets, please do not judge or discriminate against him. Instead, treat him with dignity, kindness, and respect, knowing that he is living with a mental health condition. The family has also appealed to the public not to buy him alcohol or give him weed, as both can interfere with his prescribed medication and may seriously affect his health. Let us replace stigma with understanding and compassion. Mental health conditions can affect anyone, and those living with them deserve our support, respect, and humanity.

May your church be an open house, a safe space, where everyone has a place, a community that accompanies and never excludes, that listens without judging, and draws near without fear. How I wish this law can be applied to help protect many of our girl child from being inspired into such actions .

I express my deep anguish and concern over the health condition of senior Kashmiri leaders Shabir Ahmad Shah and Mohammad Yasin Malik, as conveyed by their family members who recently visited them in jail. Shah Sahib’s wife, in a letter to me, conveyed that their daughter, who visited Shah Sahib in jail reported that he seems to be dying a silent death due to his fast deteriorating health and multiple complications with no recourse to urgent care or hospitalisation. The letter urges the authorities to at least shift him home and convert Shah Sahib’s house into a jail so that the family can take care of him and provide him the urgent medical attention, as his health cannot withstand any further delay. This has deeply alarmed me, and I once again fervently appeal to the central government to show compassion and, on humanitarian grounds, release Shah Sahib or at least, as per the family’s request, put him under arrest at home where he will be taken care of. Yasin Sahib’s mother and sister, who also met him in jail a few days back, conveyed that prolonged incarceration and confinement have taken a huge toll on his physical and mental health and that he is also in need of urgent medical care. I urge the authorities to provide medical assistance to Yasin Sahib. It is deeply distressing to hear of the pain and suffering that these and other leaders are enduring in detention.
