Psychiatristโ€™s Perspective on video: It was painful to see how casually and wrongly depression was discussed. This isnโ€™t just bad humour. It spreads dangerous myths that keep people from getting help. Hereโ€™s why what video said is factually wrong and harmful: 1. Depression is not mood swings or โ€œups and downs.โ€ Depression isnโ€™t about feeling sad for a few hours or days. Itโ€™s a serious medical condition โ€” a disorder that affects mood, thoughts, sleep, appetite, energy, and the ability to function. Clinical depression means: -Persistent low mood or emptiness lasting at least two weeks, often longer. -Loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities. -Sleep and appetite changes, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or guilt. -In some cases, thoughts of self-harm or suicide. This isnโ€™t weakness. Itโ€™s an illness involving biological, psychological, and social factors, including neurotransmitter changes in the brain. 2. Itโ€™s not a โ€œrich personโ€™s problem.โ€ Saying depression happens only to the rich is ignorant. In reality: -Depression affects people across all classes. -People in lower socioeconomic groups often have higher risk due to chronic stress, poverty, trauma, and poor access to care. -Many donโ€™t even get diagnosed or treated because of stigma and lack of services. 3. Therapy is treatment, not a fashion statement. Mocking therapy as something people do because theyโ€™ve โ€œdone wrongโ€ is dangerous. People seek therapy for: -Depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, relationship issues, burnout. -Learning healthy coping skills and emotional regulation. -Processing pain they often cannot share with anyone else safely. You donโ€™t tell someone with diabetes to โ€œjust forget itโ€ and move on โ€” why treat depression differently? Therapy and medication save lives. 4. Depression is not caused by guilt alone. The claim that people get depression because theyโ€™ve done something wrong is completely false.Depression has multiple causes: -Genetic vulnerability. -Brain chemistry and hormonal changes. -Traumatic life experiences, chronic stress, illness, or loss. -Sometimes it happens with no clear external trigger. Reducing it to โ€œguiltโ€ is not just wrong, it shames people who are already suffering. 5. Misinformation like this deepens stigma. When millions hear therapy being mocked, when they hear depression dismissed as drama or weakness, they absorb it. And then: -People suffering stay quiet. -Families donโ€™t take symptoms seriously. -Treatment gets delayed or never happens. -Stigma grows stronger. Words have consequences, especially when spoken from a public platform. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Depression is real. Itโ€™s serious. Itโ€™s treatable. It needs awareness, not mockery. Compassion, not casual cruelty. What happened in that video isnโ€™t harmless banter, itโ€™s how stigma gets fuelled. And stigma kills quietly.

Many people tagged me in a viral video of this American man, who has been widely referred to as the "Mzungu Chokoraa," claiming that he had been abandoned and was living on the streets. After I shared the video, his wife reached out to me and requested that I visit him to understand the true situation. This evening, I met him and his family, and I learned that he is not homeless. He is a married man, a father of five children, and has been living with his family in Texas, USA. According to his family, he has bipolar disorder, and his condition became worse after the passing of his mother. He is currently under medical care and takes prescribed medication. The family explained that during some episodes of his illness, he may leave home and wander the streets. This has led many people to believe that he is homeless, which is not true. They also shared that he has a passion for recycling and environmental conservation, which is why he is sometimes seen collecting recyclable materials or around dumpsites. I would like to clarify to the general public that this man is not homeless. He has a loving family that cares deeply for him. When you see him on the streets, please do not judge or discriminate against him. Instead, treat him with dignity, kindness, and respect, knowing that he is living with a mental health condition. The family has also appealed to the public not to buy him alcohol or give him weed, as both can interfere with his prescribed medication and may seriously affect his health. Let us replace stigma with understanding and compassion. Mental health conditions can affect anyone, and those living with them deserve our support, respect, and humanity.

Davis: In [Mike Johnsonโ€™s] mind, how do you qualify being a good Christian while at the same time wanting to take away health care? Former fundamentalist Levins: Mike Johnson is a beta male in a patriarchal structure. He knows that heโ€™s got to be obedient to his authority, who is Donald Trumpโ€”who to him is God. Itโ€™s not the same faith that weโ€™re used to, as far as Christians caring for their Samaritan neighbor and stopping to help, provide, and care with empathy for the needs of the country. Mike Johnsonโ€™s a theonomistโ€”he believes in Levitical law. Youโ€™re either in or youโ€™re out. And itโ€™s belonging based on belief. And there is no health care there. Fundamentalists donโ€™t use insurance programs or state aid or anything like that. I wasn't allowed to go use WIC or anything like that as an impoverished fundamentalist wife. They donโ€™t allow that in their households or in their communities. And so they donโ€™t really think that the nation needs it either. If theyโ€™re going to scale it to their model, nonbelievers will not have health care. The only people who will have health care are the Christians who are underneath their umbrella of authority. And they donโ€™t care. Theyโ€™re very heartless about this. And they talk about it in a way that is, โ€œWell, thatโ€™s your fault because you didnโ€™t believe.โ€

I express my deep anguish and concern over the health condition of senior Kashmiri leaders Shabir Ahmad Shah and Mohammad Yasin Malik, as conveyed by their family members who recently visited them in jail. Shah Sahibโ€™s wife, in a letter to me, conveyed that their daughter, who visited Shah Sahib in jail reported that he seems to be dying a silent death due to his fast deteriorating health and multiple complications with no recourse to urgent care or hospitalisation. The letter urges the authorities to at least shift him home and convert Shah Sahibโ€™s house into a jail so that the family can take care of him and provide him the urgent medical attention, as his health cannot withstand any further delay. This has deeply alarmed me, and I once again fervently appeal to the central government to show compassion and, on humanitarian grounds, release Shah Sahib or at least, as per the familyโ€™s request, put him under arrest at home where he will be taken care of. Yasin Sahibโ€™s mother and sister, who also met him in jail a few days back, conveyed that prolonged incarceration and confinement have taken a huge toll on his physical and mental health and that he is also in need of urgent medical care. I urge the authorities to provide medical assistance to Yasin Sahib. It is deeply distressing to hear of the pain and suffering that these and other leaders are enduring in detention. Reports about the worsening health and harsh conditions of other Kashmiri political detainees and youth lodged in various jails within and outside Jammu and Kashmir are equally worrying. This is a matter of human concern and compassion that is above political considerations and ideologies. I urge that immediate and adequate medical care be provided to all detainees suffering from health issues, and I appeal to the authorities and judiciary to consider their condition on humanitarian grounds and their rights as prisoners. I also urge the elected representatives of the J&K Assembly to unite on this issue and play their role especially the ruling party in securing the release and relief for the Kashmiri prisoners suffering incarceration under draconian laws.
