This follows the passage of the other two bills yesterday, that is, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill and the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill. Consequently, all four tax reform bills have now been considered for third reading and passed by both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The next step is for the conference committee which has been set up by the National Assembly to harmonise areas of differences in the two versions of the bills as passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate before transmission to Mr. President for assent.

The House of Representatives has approved the tax reform bills. VAT Sharing Formula: 50% to be distributed equally 20% to be distributed based on population 30% to be distributed based on consumption. The current 7.5% VAT rate retained. The House amended the controversial inheritance tax clause, clarifying that any inheritance received before the dissolution cannot be subject to taxation. The House has also approved the provision for continued funding of TETFUND, NASENI, and NITDA through the development levies fund.

Is the Supreme Court ruling on the impeachment of Sara Zimmerman Duterte based on erroneous facts? I was there! I didn’t miss the chance to witness history — I can say for a fact that the ruling of the Supreme Court was based on erroneous facts and anyone can check it via the Livestream of the House of Representatives that day. February 5, 2025. One of the things which concerns me here is the additional requirement that came out of nowhere— not in the 1987 Constitution and not even in the existing ruling of the Supreme Court. Speaker Martin Romualdez in an interview yesterday said that the House of Representatives followed the existing precedent also from the Supreme Court — the Francisco and Gutierrez ruling. How can the House follow something that doesn’t exist during that time? Please make sense. Atty. Princess Abante released an explainer video explaining the factual truth about what transpired in the House of Representatives on February 5. Aside from the House Journal and official reports, the public can easily check the livestream of the House of Representatives. I don’t care if the Supreme Court ruling was written by an Aquino appointee because it doesn’t make sense to me at all! Please take time to watch the video — Atty. The House Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability orders late Friday the transfer of Atty. Zuleika Lopez from the House of Representatives to the Women’s Correctional Institution in Mandaluyong City. In a statement, the House said VP Sara Duterte introduced herself as legal counsel of her chief of staff, and "blocked" the order by "physically preventing" House personnel and "compromising security protocols by bringing an excessive and unathorized armed presence" into the Batasan complex. Reports of armed DSS officials storming and sealing the office of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda and the alleged militarization of the Assembly complex at Alausa are deeply troubling. This brazen display of force at our state's legislative chamber represents a dangerous assault on democratic institutions and the principle of separation of powers. The deployment of security forces to intimidate elected representatives and interfere with legislative functions is reminiscent of our dark days under military rule and has no place in a democratic society. The Lagos State House of Assembly is the people's house—a symbol of our democratic values and aspirations. All well-meaning Lagosians must resist any attempt to undermine their independence through intimidation tactics. Therefore, I call for the immediate withdrawal of DSS operatives from the Assembly complex and demand a full public explanation of the legal basis for this action. Without respect for established democratic processes and the independence of the Lagos State House of Assembly, we risk a shameful descent into anarchy.
